Pac-10 Invitational

Sandoval, Macdonald & Fuqua Score Provisional Marks in Seattle
02/15/04 | Track and Field
SEATTLE - The University of Oregon women's track and field team posted one NCAA automatic and two other provisional marks in the Pac-10 Invitational, Saturday at the Dempsey Indoor at the University of Washington.
Redshirt junior Magdalena Sandoval scored the biggest thrill off the day with a 41-second personal best in the 5,000 (fourth, 16:04.40). The Los Alamos, N.M. was one of six collegians that easily met the NCAA automatic standard (16:15.00) and will dominate the collegiate rankings next week. Only one other runner nationally had went faster prior to this weekend, with the NCAA Championships a month away in Fayetteville, Ark. (3/12-13).
Stanford's Alicia Craig won Saturday by four seconds (15:56.58), ahead of Michigan State's Jamie Kryzminski, (second, 15:59.41), Texas A&M's Melissa Gulli, (third, 16:03.57), Sandoval (16:04.40), BYU's Laura Turner (fifth, 16:04.89) and ASU's Amy Hastings, ASU (sixth, 16:06.91), and two others met the NCAA provisional mark of 16:45.00.
Sandoval had made her 5K collegiate debut outdoors in 2003, and broke 16:50 in both of her appearances - the West Regional (11th, 16:45.91) and Stanford Invite (16:43.94). She turned in a breakthrough cross country campaign last fall, and earned Pac-10 First-Team honors with a fifth-place league finish. She followed with ninth place in the West Regional for an NCAA individual invite, but was tripped in the start of the collegiate finale before eventually taking 105th.
Also in the distances, redshirt senior Eri Macdonald ran a four-second indoor personal best in the 800 (seventh overall, 2:08.12) and dipped under the NCAA provisional mark by almost a second (2:09.00). The Honolulu, Hawai'i native ranked third among collegians in the field that was topped by Audrea Morgan of the Farm Team (2:05.81). For a realistic chance at making the NCAA field, Macdonald will need to run a time in the low 2:07 range at least, with nine runners already running sub-2:07 this season, and more to come in the upcoming conference championship and last chance meets.
In other sections of the 800, redshirt sophomore Sara Schaaf ran a three-second indoor best and missed an all-time personal best by less than a second (17th, 2:12.77), and junior Michelle Donovan lowered her overall best (including outdoors) by almost two seconds (23rd, 2:15.58).
In the shot put, redshirt junior Bree Fuqua (third, 51-0) eclipsed the NCAA provisional standard by more than a foot (49-10 1/2) for a 1 foot, seven-inch season best, and was less than three inches shy of her personal best from her Wisconsin career (51-2 3/4). The first-year Duck climbed one spot to third all-time in UO history, less than two inches behind #2-ranked Cora Aguilar (51?1 1/2). Also in the shot, senior Mary Etter enjoyed a 1 foot, 1-inch indoor best (fifth, 49-6 1/4), and sophomore Whitney Gum also took a personal best (44-9) and one-foot, 2 3/4-inch season best.
The personal best surge continued in the weight throw with similar efforts by junior Katie Kersh (fifth, 54-8), senior Jill Hoxmeier (seventh, 54-2 3/4) and Gum (14th, 51-6 1/2).
Redshirt senior Amanda Brown enjoyed a 5 3/4-inch indoor best in the triple jump (third, 40-8 3/4) for her third-best wind-legal mark ever including outdoors. Junior Clarice Hayward-Lee added a 7 1/2-inch personal best in the triple jump (40-1 1/4).
Senior and returning NCAA qualifier Kirsten Larwin took eighth in the pole vault with a four-inch season best (12-9 1/2), and was only two inches shy of the NCAA provisional mark (12-11 1/2). Junior Hannah Moore followed in ninth with a two-inch indoor personal best (12-3 1/2), and the same mark as freshman Emily Enders (10th) - with both only two inches shy of the Pac-10 standard. Former Duck Niki McEwen finished second (13-5 3/4), behind national collegiate leader Chelsea Johnson of UCLA who scored a meet record and season best (first, 14-8).
In the high jump, redshirt junior Rachael Kriz improved her indoor personal best from a month earlier by a half-inch (fourth, 5-5 3/4), and was 1 1/4 inches shy of the Pac-10 standard.
Among other notable UO women's marks, junior Kayla Mellott ran a Mountain Pacific qualifier in her season debut (400, 12th, 58.22), junior transfer Sofie Abildtrup made her second appearance for the Ducks (200, third, 24.87) and was less than a half-second off her season best (24.39), the 4x400 ran a two-second season best (3:48.70), and junior Elisa Crumley lowered her season best in the 60 (12th, 8.15).
The Duck men sent a scaled back unit to Seattle and claimed a win in the high jump courteey of redshirt freshman Bobby Owen. The Mansfield, Texas native tied his indoor personal best, and earned the blue ribbon on fewer misses over runner-up Chris Staton of UCLA. Freshman Sol Rexius finished ninth the 60 hurdle final in his second-fastest time of the year (8.32) and easily met the Mountain Pacific qualifying mark in the 60 hurdles (8.54). Twin brother Caleb took 12th in the 60 final (7.11) and ran .01 seconds faster in the prelim (7.10) - and was less than a tenth of a second shy of the Mountain Pacific standard in both (7.04). Junior transfer Scott Lamb also claimed his first Mountain Pacific invite in the 400 (20th, 49.17).
