Abildtrup Takes Hat Trick of Wins in Pepsi Team Invite
04/10/04 | Track and Field
EUGENE - The University of Oregon men's and women's teams successfully defended their team crowns in the 15th annual Pepsi Team Invitational at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon.
The Duck women capitalized on seven event wins to tally 184 1/2 points and edge Washington (169), Minnesota (third, 160 1/2) and Colorado (100). The Duck men posted eight individual titles to rack up 191 points and outdistance Minnesota (second, 169), Washington (third, 144) and Colorado (fourth, 101). Duck women's winners included Sofie Abildtrup (200, 23.94; 400, 54.49), Sara Schaaf (800, 2:10.15), the 4x400 relay (3:46.92), Rachael Kriz (high jump, 5-8), Clarice Hayward-Lee (triple jump, 40-4 3/4), Megan Kriz (hammer, 181-9) and Sarah Malone (javelin, 167-10). Men of Oregon's winners included Travis Anderson (400, 47.04), Eric Mitchum (110 hurdles, 13.70; 400 hurdles, 51.47), Jeff Lindsey (high jump, 7-1 3/4), Tommy Skipper (pole vault, 17-5), Leonidas Watson (long jump, 24-2 1/4; triple jump, 48-10 3/4) and Adam Jenkins (javelin, 218-0). Breaking down Duck women's action, sophomore hammer thrower Megan Kriz kicked off the day with a 10-foot personal best (first, 181-9) by eight inches over Minnesota's Nina Cotolupenco, while sophomore Whitney Gum followed with an eight-foot best (third, 174-10). Kriz's mark moved up her one spot to fourth all-time for the Ducks, with Jordan Sauvage's school record from last year (191-4) now less than 10 feet away. Later in the afternoon's discus, senior Jill Hoxmeier was five inches off her personal best and 1 1/2 feet from the win (second, 161-7) behind Minnesota's Nicole Kopari. Oregon junior Bree Fuqua followed in third place (153-9), and sophomore Whitney Gum led the squad in the shot put with a 7 1/2-inch personal best (45-0 1/2). All-American and junior Sarah Malone won the javelin with her third meet past the 167-foot line and won by 17 feet (167-10) over Washington's Tiffany Zahn (second, 150-0), and junior Rachael Kriz added more points in third place (139-6) with a one foot, three-inch season best. At the same time, the Toledo, Ore., native Kriz was doing double duty in the high jump and ended with a blue ribbon in her primary event, and her 3/4-inch personal best (5-8) netted regional and Pac-10 invites. In the jumps, senior Kirsten Larwin took second in the pole vault with her second-highest outdoor mark (13-1 3/4) behind Washington All-American Kate Soma (first, 13-5 3/4). UO freshman Emily Enders added fifth (12-4). Senior Abby Andrus took second in the long jump with a windy 18-11 1/4 (+2.6 wind) that bettered her best mark so far of 2004 (18-9 3/4 indoors), and junior Maegan Traver added a personal best (17-6 1/4) to score in fifth place. Washington's Grace Vela won the event by a seven-inch cushion (19-6 1/4w, 2.9w). Andrus came back to finish second in the 100 hurdles with a Pac-10 qualifier (14.06, w:3.5) and was barely edged by Minnesota's Vanessa Nelson (first, 14.00w). Junior Clarice Hayward-Lee won the triple jump with her first 40-foot outdoor leap of her career (40-4 3/4w, 3.7w) for a nine-inch advantage over Colorado's Liza Negriff (second, 39-7 1/4w, w:2.9), and UO junior Maegan Traver followed in sixth (37-3 3/4, w:1.9). In the sprints, Duck junior Sofie Abildtrup opened the day with a win in the 400 (54.49) and Pac-10 and regional qualifier that moved her to ninth all-time for the Ducks and rewrote her former Duck best that came indoors (54.76) in March. Oregon junior Michelle Donovan followed in third (56.80) with a one-second personal best. Abildtrup returned to take the 200 in a .08-second personal best (23.94, w:1.8) with another set of regional and Pac-10 qualifiers that also moved her seventh all-time for the Ducks. She beat Minnesota's Melisa Woltman (24.64) by .71 seconds, and Donovan followed in sixth place (25.95). The Fredericksberg, Denmark native returned at meet's end to seal the team win when she took the lead back in the 4x400 on the final straight en route to a 54.40-second split, while the team sped to an almost one-second season best (3:46.92). Junior Kayla Mellot added another league invite in the 400 hurdles (third, 61.43), and senior C'Rel McAllister was a second away from the standard with her fifth-place finish (63.05). In the distances, redshirt sophomore Sara Schaaf held the lead from the bell in the 800 en route to the win (2:10.15) over Washington's Kira Harrison (second, 2:10.84). The Klamath Falls, native Schaaf missed her personal best set two weekends ago in Stanford (2:10.06) by only .09 seconds. Redshirt sophomore Taylor Bryant added a season best in the 1,500 (sixth, 4:42.23). On the men's side, All-American and sophomore Eric Mitchum cruised to a .67 second victory in the 110 hurdles (13.70, w:1.6) in a wind-legal personal best. Mitchum missed Micah Harris's two-year old school record by only .03 seconds (13.67), and edged Minnesota's Travis Brandstatter (second, 14.37). Mitchum's mark rewote his previous wind-legal best of 13.75 from the 2003 Pac-10 Championships, while the Calumet City, Ill., native blazed to a windy best of 13.50w at the Texas Relays last week with the aid of a 3.0 mps wind. Also Saturday, Oregon's AK Ikwuakor clocked a .47-second season best (third, 14.39) to again meet the Pac-10 qualifying standard. Mitchum returned to win the 400 hurdles (51.47) by a scant .05-second margin over senior teammate Brandon Holliday (second, 51.52). Mitchum's time stood as a two-second personal best and moved him to 10th all-time for the Ducks just ahead of former Duck and current Lane CC coach Grady O'Connor (51.49). Holliday's time Saturday was .37-second season best as his former time (51.89 from the Oregon Preview three weeks ago) ranked second in the region and 16th nationally this past week. Also in the sprints, sophomore Travis Anderson won the 400 (47.04) and was .10 seconds off his personal best, and edged Minnesota's Robb Merritt (second, 47.16). Duck newcomer and junior transfer Kedar Inico followed in fourth place (47.43) in his Duck debut for his first Pac-10 invite, and was just shy of the regional standard (47.26). In their Duck debuts, the football pair of freshman Ryan Gilliam and Brian Paysinger took second (10.72w, w:2.3) and sixth (11.23w) in the 100, while Washington's Patrick Davidson won the blue ribbon at the tape (10.68w). Sophomore Travis Anderson added second in the 200 in a personal best (21.27, w:1.9) just ahead of Inico (third, 21.47). Minnesota's Adam Steele, last year's NCAA outdoor 400 champion, won by a .06-second margin (21.21) over Anderson. In the distances, the Duck 1,500 duo of junior Eric Logsdon (fifth, 3:49.09) and senior Ryan Andrus (sixth, 3:49.64) both met the Pac-10 mark (3:50.14) and were a second shy of the regional standard (3:48.21). Logsdon's mark was a half-second season best, and Andrus made his season debut in the event. Freshman Mike McGrath added second in the 800 in a nearly one-second season best and first regional mark of the season (1:50.34) behind Minnesota's Trent Riter (first, 1:49.75), and Oregon newcomer and junior Roderick Dotts made his 800 season debut for the Ducks (sixth, 1:53.06). In the 3,000, Oregon junior Brett Holts added fourth (8:26.27). In the field events, sophomore Jeff Lindsey won the high jump and improved his Duck best by a 1/4 inch (7-1 3/4) and edged Minnesota's touted duo of Bryant Howe (second, 7-0 1/2) and Josh Paulson (third, 7-0 1/2). Oregon sophomore Teddy Davis followed in fourth (6-10 3/4) as both Oregon jumpers met the regional mark for the first time in 2004. Returning Pac-10 champion and senior Adam Jenkins won his official season debut with a Pac-10 and regional mark (218-0) and was just over four feet off his personal best from last year's West Regional (222-4). Freshman Tommy Skipper made his event debut (third, 198-0) and was more than a foot past the Pac-10 qualifying mark. At meet's end, Skipper returned to claim the pole vault (17-5) over fellow All-American senior teammate Trevor Woods who scored a 4 1/2-inch outdoor season best (second, 16-9 1/4). Junior hammer thrower Paul Etter added his third meet past the 190-foot line (third, 190-10), and freshman Brandon Tower made his event debut (eighth, 141-4). In the shot put, Tower returned to lead the Ducks (fifth, 47-9 3/4), and edged sophomore football defensive lineman and event neophyte Haloti Ngata (sixth, 45-10 3/4) and Etter (ninth, 42-9 1/2). Junior Leonidas Watson won the long jump early in the afternoon on his fifth and final attempt by a four-inch margin (24-2 1/4w, w:2.4) over Minnesota's Steffen Landgraf (second, 23-10 1/4w, w:2.2), and senior Gabriel LeMay (sixth, 21-5 1/2). Watson added another victory later in the triple jump (48-10 3/4) by more than a foot over Minnesota's Pat Akpaette (second, 47-10 1/2). Colorado junior Dathan Ritzenhein ran solo in arguably the meet's top performance with a 24-second meet record in the 3,000 (7:50.39) and the fastest clocking by an American collegian in 2004 (and sixth overall on the U.S. for collegians or post-collegians including indoors and outdoors). The only other meet record to fall Saturday went to Washington's 4x400 of Cristian Adams, Phillip McCary, Sean Williams and Bruce Jackson (3:09.14) who were two seconds faster than the former mark set by Arizona in 1997 (3:11.78). Others men's blue ribbons went to Washington's Patrick Davidson (first, 10.68w, w:2.3) and Eric Garner (1,500, first, 3:44.76), Minnesota's Adam Steele (200, 21.21, w:1.9), Trent Riter (1:49.75), Lynden Reder (hammer, first, 209-1), Karl Erickson (shot put, 57-3) and the 4x100 (41.68). Women's opposing wins went to Colorado's Renee Metivier (1,500, 4:26.28), Washington's Ingvill Makestad (3,000, 9:35.25), Kate Soma (pole vault, first, 13-5 3/4) and Grace Vela (long jump, 19-6 1/4w, w:2.9), and Minnesota's Melisa Woltman (100, 12.10w, w.2.2), Vanessa Nelson (100 hurdles, 14.00w, w:3.5), Melissa Steele (400 hurdles, 60.61), Nicole Kopari (discus, 163-3) and the 4x100 (46.62). Next up, the Ducks look ahead to their annual trip to Los Angeles next weekend, primarily for the Mt. SAC Relays (Thu.-Sat., April 15-17). Several competitors may also compete in the nearby Pomona Pitzer Invitational (Fri., April 16) and/or Long Beach State Invitational (Sat., April 17).
