Richards And The Ducks Take Down Top-Ranked Arizona
04/25/04 | Softball
EUGENE ? Oregon junior Ashley Richards hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead the Ducks to a 1-0 victory over No. 1 Arizona in front of 767 fans at Howe Field Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Amy Harris and junior Ani Nyhus combined for the shutout with Nyhus (19-8) picking up the win ? her eighth conference victory ? while Arizona standout Alicia Hollowell (32-1) took her first loss of the season.
With the win, Oregon improves to 34-12 overall, 8-4 Pacific-10 Conference while Arizona dropped to 45-2, 9-1 in losing its first conference game. For the second time this season, Oregon has won over a team undefeated in conference and is two conference wins shy of matching its win total (10) from last season. "I am so proud of our players," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "We played excellent and continued to press throughout the game. Amy pitched an incredible game and then Ani came in and kept us on pace. We were hitting and playing great defense and I thought we deserved this win." The win ? Oregon's first over Arizona since 2000 ? snapped the Wildcats 17-game road winning streak. Harris pitched five and two thirds stellar innings, allowing just three hits, no runs while striking out five. She was relieved by Nyhus in the sixth inning and the two combined for Oregon's fifth win by shutout, holding Arizona scoreless for the first time this season. "Anytime you get a win in the Pac-10 it's awesome," Harris said. "But to beat the number team in the nation is even better. And, I can't really take all the credit. Everyone stepped up today on both offense and defense." Senior Julie Jaime provided a combination of both offense and defense that proved to be key for the Ducks. Not only did Jaime go 2-for-3 against Hollowell she threw out Arizona first baseman Wendy Allen at home on a throw from left field, preventing a run that would have likely been enough for Arizona to win in seven innings. Jaime currently leads the team with a .500 average in conference play. Oregon freshman Suzie Barnes also did her part offensively, going 2-for-2 while senior Jenn Poore was 1-for-1 with two intentional walks. Poore was 2-for-2 with a home run, three walks and a sacrifice in two games against the Wildcats this weekend. The game remained scoreless through seven innings as both teams failed to capitalize on opportunities leaving a combined 14 runners on base. In the bottom of the eighth, Richards sealed the win with her eighth home run of the season. Oregon has now beat every Pac-10 team under second-year head coach Kathy Arendsen.
