Softball Clinches Civil War Series With 2-0 Shutout Over Oregon State

CORVALLIS ? Oregon pitcher Ani Nyhus continued to frustrate the opposition, throwing her third one-hitter of the season and second in conference play as the 14th-ranked Ducks shutout No. 15 Oregon State 2-0 at the OSU Softball Complex in Corvallis Friday afternoon. With the win, Oregon improves to 30-9 overall, 4-1 Pacific-10 Conference while Oregon State dropped to 33-12, 1-4.
Nyhus has shutout four of her last five opponents and has allowed just three runs to score in her last 42 and two thirds innings pitched. Against the Beavers, the junior from White Rock, B.C., struck out nine batters and walked just one while allowing only three batters to reach base. "I really like the way we are playing right now," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "We're playing solid all around softball ? great pitching, timely hits and good defense. The key is for us to continue playing this way and continue to improve." Sophomore Beth Boskovich drove in Jenn Poore with a single up the middle in the first inning and freshman Suzie Barnes extended Oregon's lead to 2-0 in the second inning with a double to deep center field that scored sophomore Dani Baird. Baird led Oregon's offense, going 2-for-3 with a run scored as the Ducks finished the game with five hits. Oregon State clean up hitter Vanessa Iapala broke up the no hitter, singling through the middle in the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Beavers failed to bring her home and Oregon preserved its 2-0 lead.
