Late Homer Lifts Huskies To 1-0 Win Over Oregon

EUGENE ? Washington sophomore Sarah Hyatt hit a solo home run in the eighth inning to lift the Huskies to a 1-0 win over No. 11 Oregon in front of 722 fans at Howe Field Sunday afternoon. With the win, Washington snapped a three-game losing skid to Oregon en route to improving to 34-12 overall, 8-5 Pacific-10 Conference while the Ducks dropped to 35-14, 9-6.
"I didn't think we made adjustments offensively today," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "We had ample opportunities to score, but we didn't put down bunts and we didn't get key hits." After scoring 10 runs against the 7th-ranked Huskies in Saturday's win, Oregon managed just three hits Sunday ? a single each by Jenn Poore, Ashley Richards and Beth Boskovich. Oregon pitcher Ani Nyhus (20-10) scattered five hits and struck out six in the loss while Washington pitcher Ashley Boek (23-7) had 11 strikeouts in the win The game remained scoreless through seven full innings before Hyatt hit her 11th home run of the season over the left field fence. Oregon hosts Portland State in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. before going on the road to face Arizona State Friday and Arizona Saturday and Sunday.
