Seminoles Outlast Ducks In 12 Inning Marathon To Advance In Championship Bracket
05/22/04 | Softball
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ? It took over four hours, but No. 1 seeded Florida State found a way to protect its 27 game home win-streak, defeating No. 2 seed Oregon, 5-4, in 12 innings at the NCAA Regionals in Tallahassee, Fla., Saturday afternoon. The game went four hours and 31 minutes as the teams combined to leave 25 runners on base, failing to capitalize on opportunities once the game went into extra innings.
Oregon (40-20) will face the winner of the South Florida/Cal State Northridge at approximately 4:40 p.m. PDT. Florida State (60-9) advances to the championship game Sunday at 10 a.m. PDT. The Seminoles loaded the bases in the 12th inning after doing the same in the 11th, but this time a single through the left side by Veronica Wootson scored first baseman Beth Wade for the winning run. All-American pitcher Jess van der Linden (27-6) relieved starter Casey Hunter in the fourth inning and went nine innings, giving up just two hits while striking out 11 to pick up her second win of the tournament. Oregon senior Anissa Meashintubby (11-4) came in to relieve Ani Nyhus and pitched five and two thirds innings in the loss. Offensively, catcher Jenn Poore led the Ducks, going 3-for-6 with a run scored and an RBI. Sophomore Beth Boskovich and junior Erin Goodell hit back-to-back singles with one out in the third inning and third baseman Ashley Richards hit her third double of the tournament to score both and give the Ducks a 2-0 lead. Poore got her second hit of the game ? hit to shallow right field ? to score Richards and extend Oregon's lead to 3-0. A critical error by Florida State shortstop Tatiana George in Oregon's next at bat allowed Poore to score an unearned run and put the Ducks ahead 4-0. van der Linden drove in Wootson with a hit to shallow right field to pull Florida State within 4-1. It was the first run the Ducks allowed in the tournament van der Linden relieved starter Casey Hunter in the fourth inning after Oregon sophomore Breanne Sabol led off the inning with a single up the middle. Freshman Suzie Barnes advanced Sabol with a sacrifice bunt and van der Linden put runners on first and second by walking Boskovich. Goodell advanced the runners to second and third with another sacrifice, but the Ducks were unable to put another run across the board as Richards popped up to second for the third out. Florida State threatened in the bottom of the fifth inning afer a lead-off single by right fielder LaShaun Davis. Wootson then reached on a fielders choice, but Davis was out at second on a throw from pitcher Amy Harris to Sabol. Left fielder Natasha Jacob then hit an infield single to put runners at first and second and both advanced when Van der Linden hit back to the pitcher and was out at first. With two outs, Harris struck out clean up hitter Lesley Palmer. The Seminoles offense finally inched back in the sixth inning, loading the bases after a walk, an Oregon error and a hit batter. George scored on a wild pitch to pull Florida State within two runs, 4-2. At that point, Nyhus re-entered for Harris with runners at first and second with one out. Nyhus walked Davis to load the bases and a two-RBI single by Wootson tied the game, 4-4. Meashintubby then came into the game for Nyhus and got Natasha Jacob to groundout to first base for the third out. Oregon capitalized on Florida State mistakes to threaten in the ninth inning as Sabol reached second on a throwing error by George and advanced to third on a passed ball by catcher Elisa Vasquez. Barnes then walked to put runners at the corners and van der Linden struck out Beth Boskovich for the first out. Barnes then stole second to put runners at second and thrid, but Sabol was picked off at third by Vasquez on a missed suicide squeeze. With two outs, van der Linden struck out Goodell to get out of the inning. Florida State put pressure on Oregon's defense again in the 11th as Davis hit an infield single to lead off the inning and Wootson hit a sacrifice bunt to advanced Davis to third. Jacob reached on an error to put runners at first and third and Florida State loaded the bases when Meashintubby intentionally walked van der Linden. Meashintubby then struck out Palmer for the second out and Vasquez grounded out to short for the final out.
