Pier Park Preview

Withers & Harmon Pace Harriers in Opener
09/10/04 | Cross Country
PORTLAND - The University of Oregon men's and women's cross country teams opened their season in familiar settings Friday afternoon, in the Pier Park Preview in Pier Park in Northwest Portland.
On the men's side, a pair of Duck freshmen shined as J.K. Withers (second, 20:38) and Pat Swick (12th, 20:28) led the ?B' squad. In the chase for top honors, Portland's B. Robinson (first, 20:32) cruised to the win late with a strong final half-mile surge to edge Withers who averaged 5:10 pace for the race. "This is only my second real workout, so I didn't know what to expect," Withers said. "I was happy to run even pace, and finish fairly strong. It was fun to be able to put on the Oregon uniform for the first time. It's something that means a lot, and it's fun to be a part of the team and try to raise your racing to a new level." Other Duck finishers among Friday's five-man unit included 800-meter runners Jeff DeWolf (24th, 22:31), Roderick Dotts (39th, 26:34) and Ryan Flaherty (26:34). Overall in the men's team races, the scaled-back Oregon ?B' unit lost to a Portland ?B' unit (19-42), and also to St. Mary's (28-29) and Portland State (22-35). On the women's side, the Ducks swept their four, dual-scored match-ups against Portland (18-43), Portland State (19-41), Oregon State (18-49) and St. Marys (15-50). Individually, redshirt senior Laura Harmon crossed the 5K finish line first (18:10) after leading from start to finish. In the second half of the race, she gradually escaped freshman teammate Katie Leary as the Klamath Falls native took second (18:25). "Laura and Katie established themselves up front early and showed that they're going to be great training partners," Oregon women's distance coach Marnie Mason said. "Laura continues to position herself as a leader and had a great summer of training, and Katie can take advantage of her experience. Ultimately we would like our top five to be as close to a minute apart as possible, and we have the talent to do that." Harmon suited up for the Ducks on the trails for the first time in nearly two years after she redshirted last fall, then followed with an NCAA trip on the outdoor oval in the 5,000 last spring. The Vancouver, Wash., native and Jesuit High School product clocked one- and two-mile splits of 5:48 and 11:38 Friday en route to her ending time of 18:11. In comparison, she ran a time of 18:37 on the same course last year when she reshirted and took second overall behind Duck teammate Eri Macdonald (18:24). "I was maybe hoping to break 18:00 but there wasn't anybody to really push the pace with," Harmon said, "but that will change at the Roy Griak meet in two weeks. I like this course because you can test yourself a little but can also find places to recover. It was really nice to be back in a Duck cross country uniform because you run that much harder when you're with the team, and they're relying on you." Three other Ducks placed top-10 - redshirt junior Haripurkh Khalsa (fifth, 19:07) and freshmen Sarah Pearson (eighth, 19:25) and Heather Fitz-Gustafson (ninth, 19:31). Other Duck finishers included redshirt junior and transfer Mandi Fitz-Gustafson (13th, 19:56), and the unattached freshman pair of Kasey Harwood (18th, 20:20) and Maegan Kuntz (29th, 21:00). "I was really happy with the way we ran up front with five in the top nine overall," Mason said. "We have a lot of young talent, so this was a great race for them to see where they're at initially after a few days of hard training. The course was perfect in that it had some undulations, but wasn't overly brutal. A lot of the kids' families could make the trip, too, so it was a good icebreaker." Mason's crew is certainly filled with new faces with only two letterwinners on the starting line Friday - Harmon and Khalsa. Among the Ducks' six-member freshman class, five hail from Oregon, while Harwood arrived from Polson, Mont. Complete results from Friday can be found at the
