Volleyball Splits Final Day at Portland State Tourney

PORTLAND, Ore. - The University of Oregon volleyball team split its final day at the Portland State Tournament, losing to British Columbia in an exhibition match 28-30, 24-30, 30-19, 30-26, 15-12 and defeating Gonzaga in the final match 30-19, 30-25, 30-23, to claim the Portland State Tournament title.
"We started the tournament off very sluggish," Oregon head coach Carl Ferreira said. "Other than the final three games against British Columbia, I felt the first two games against UBC and the three against Gonzaga were our best of the tourney."
Against UBC, the Ducks (6-0) got off to a hot start, winning their first two games before dropping the final three. Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Mason paced the Ducks with 19 kills, while senior outside hitter Lauren Westendorf recorded 17 kills and 16 digs.
Senior libero Kaite O'Neil returned after sitting out yesterday's match against Northern Colorado and posted 22 digs. Sophomore setter Heather Madison notched 42 assists.
In the second game, Oregon rebounded with a sweep over Gonzaga. The Ducks record a team hitting percentage of .361 while averaging only seven errors per game.
Three players for the Ducks (O'Neil, Madison and Kelly Russell) posted eight digs.
The Oregon offense was led by Westendorf's 17 kills and Madison's 30 assists.
Westendorf and Madison were both honored as All-Portland State Tournament performers, with Westendorf earning MVP honors for the second consecutive tournament.
The Ducks take to the road next weekend when they travel to California for the Sacramento State Invitational. Oregon will open play against Charlotte, Fri., Sept. 17 at 9 a.m. Other teams in the tourney include San Jose State, Seton Hall and host Sacramento State.
