Ducks Move up a Spot at Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge

GLENVIEW, Ill. -- Gregg LaVoie shot consecutive par rounds of 72-72 Tuesday to climb to a tie for 18th in the final standings of the Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge, played at the 7,149-yard, par 72 The Glen Club. As a team, Oregon moved up one spot to 13th with its best score of the tournament, a 296 in the final round.
After six teams completed Monday's second round that was suspended due to darkness, Northwestern's David Merkow came on strong in the final round with three birdies in his last four holes to win the individual title at 7-under 207. Merkow fired a 68 Tuesday afternoon.
His effort led the Wildcats to a final round 285 as Northwestern defeated Minnesota by three strokes 860-863 for the team championship.
Arizona State finished third at 865, UCLA was fourth at 868 and Washington took fifth at 874. The Ducks slipped past California for 13th at 905. Cal finished at 920.
In the conference portion of the Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge, the Big Ten got its first win in the series by defeating the Pac-10 by 51 strokes. Each conference counted its top six team scores in each round to determine the conference challenge winner.
LaVoie was tied for 41st when the day began, but climbed into the top 20 with his steady play. The senior from Pasco, Wash., now has four top-25 finishes in his last five tournaments dating back to last season. He was the only Duck to finish in the top 40 at The Glen Club.
