No. 18 Softball Falls To Creighton, No. 7 Alabama At NFCA Classic

COLUMBUS, Ga. ? The 18th-ranked University of Oregon softball team dropped a pair of games at the 10th-annual NFCA Classic in Columbus, Ga., Friday afternoon. In their opening game of the tournament the Ducks fell 4-1 to Creighton before losing 3-0 to No. 7 Alabama in the second game. Oregon is now 6-6 this season and will take on Florida Atlantic at 9:30 a.m. PST Saturday.
Alabama starter Stephanie Van Brakle struck out 12 batters and gave up four hits to secure the victory. Oregon senior pitcher Lindsey Kontra contained the Alabama offense throughout the game, allowing just four hits and striking out four. Kontra did not give up an earned run in four innings of work, but fell to 0-1 on the season with the loss.
Freshman Lovena Chaput broke up Van Brakles' no-hitter in the fourth inning, doubling down the right field line while sophomore Kristi Leiter finished the game 2-for-3 and junior Dani Baird accounted for the Ducks' other hit.
Alabama capitalized on two Oregon errors in the fifth inning, eventually taking a 1-0 lead when shortstop Dominique Accetturo stole home with no outs. Second baseman Leah White then scored an unearned run on an RBI single by Staci Ramsey and the Tide added a third unearned run when Jackie Wilkins walked with the bases loaded to score catcher Ashley Courtney. It was all the scoring in the game and improved Alabama's record to 17-1 overall this season.
In the first game, Creighton scored an unearned run in the first inning to go ahead, 1-0, and added another run on a passed ball in the third inning to extend its lead to 2-0. Later in the inning, Creighton freshman Mary Egan hit her first career home run ? a two RBI shot to left field, to put the Owls ahead, 4-0. The Ducks made it 4-1 on an RBI by by sophomore Kayleen Hudson in the seventh inning.
Freshman pitcher Alicia Cook took the loss and is currently 3-2 on the season. Cook had seven strikeouts in the game and has 19 strikeouts in her last two starts. Offensively, senior Ashley Richards finished the game 2-for-3 to lead the Ducks and freshman Kristi Jorgensen scored the lone run.
