Ducks Drill IPFW In Season Opener
02/03/05 | Softball
HONOLULU, Hawaii ? Nobody on the Oregon softball team wanted to be left out on opening day. Especially the Duck freshmen.
Pitcher Alicia Cook (Elmira) got her first collegiate win, striking out four batters and allowing no hits in three innings of work, while third baseman Joanna Gail ? also making her first collegiate appearance ? had six RBI as the two led the Ducks to a 14-0 opening day win over Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne at the Hawaii Paradise Classic.
"I couldn't be happier for our players and especially the freshman," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "They all got a chance to play and make an impact and I was extremely happy with the way we came out today. I thought as a team we were very prepared and executed extremely well both offensively and defensively. Now we have to come back tomorrow with the same intensity."
Cook retired nine consecutive batters, allowing no runners to reach base and she also drove in a run in the first inning. Seniors Ani Nyhus and Lindsey Kontra each pitched an inning in relief, allowing just one hit each. IPFW pitcher Beth Harmon took the loss.
Behind Gail, Oregon tied its single-game record with 13 RBI, tying its mark set in 2000. With 14 hits, the Ducks were one shy of their game record of 15.
Oregon scored six runs in the first inning as the first six batters reached base and all crossed the plate. Sophomore Suzie Barnes started the rally with a double to center field and scored on a single by shortstop Breanne Sabol. The Ducks loaded the bases when Beth Boskovich was hit by a pitch followed by a Dani Baird single. Freshman catcher T.J. Eadus walked to score Sabol and Boskovich scored after Kayleen Hudson also walked. Cook drove in Baird with a sacrifice fly to left field and Gail's first collegiate hit was a two-RBI double that capped Oregon's rally in the first.
Baird, who finished the game 2-for-2, hit a solo home run in the second inning to extend Oregon's lead to 7-0 and a sacrifice fly by Erin Goodell in the third inning put the Ducks ahead 8-0.
Sophomore Kristi Leiter added to the Ducks' lead with an RBI single to center field in the third inning and Gail's second collegiate hit was a grand slam in the fourth inning that put the Ducks ahead, 14-0.
Seven different Oregon players had a hit in the game, led by Sabol, who finished the day 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
The Ducks continue play vs. Jacksonville at 6 p.m. PST tomorrow.
