Three Home Runs, Strong Pitching Lead Ducks To Sweep Over Nevada
03/25/05 | Softball
EUGENE ? Behind two strong pitching performances and three home runs, the University of Oregon softball team swept a doubleheader vs. Nevada in front of 323 fans at Howe Field Friday afternoon. In game one, the Ducks used two home runs and a strong relief effort by senior pitcher Lindsey Kontra to win 3-1. Junior pitcher Amy Harris (9-4) then struck out 11 batters to lead the Ducks to another 3-1 win.
Oregon has now won five straight and improves to 18-9 overall this season while Kontra improves to 3-1. Nevada drops to 10-16 overall with the two losses.
"It's important for us to continue to play well both offensively and defensively and I thought we continued to be consistent today," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "Our pitching has been very strong and we continued to get offensive sparks to carry us."
Oregon had 14 hits in the two games and committed no errors while the Wolf Pack finished with 10 hits and three errors. Senior catcher Ashley Richards was 2-for-6 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored. Sophmore Ann Marie Topps and junior Beth Boskovich also homered and freshman Kristi Jorgensen hit a two-RBI double in the second game to lead Oregon to the win.
In the opener, Nevada first baseman Candice Rainwater doubled in the third inning and later scored when left fielder Kari Stockstill hit the second double of the inning to give Nevada a 1-0 lead.
Richards hit her first home run of the season ? a two RBI shot in the fourth inning ? to give Oregon a 2-1 advantage and Topps her hit her first homer of the season in the sixth inning to make it 3-1.
Kontra relieved starter Alicia Cook in the third inning and shut down Nevada's offense, allowing just one hit and striking out three while walking none. Offensively, freshman Lovena Chaput led the way, going 2-for-2 in the lead off spot.
Nevada took the early lead again in the second game after a solo home run by catcher Lindsey Hall, but a home run by Boskovich ? her third of the season ? in the fourth inning tied the game. Jorgensen's double in the sixth inning scored pinch runner Lauren Rascon and right fielder Kayleen Hudson to secure the sweep for the Ducks.
Oregon hosts BYU in a doubleheader at Howe Field tomorrow at 1 p.m.
