Softball Defeats Visiting Vikings, 2-1
03/09/05 | Softball
EUGENE ? Oregon sophomore Suzie Barnes drove in freshman Lovena Chaput with a line-drive RBI in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift the Ducks to a 2-1 win over visiting Portland State in front of 361 fans at Howe Field Wednesday afternoon. With the win, Oregon improves to 11-8 overall while Portland State falls to 4-9.
Junior pitcher Amy Harris (Eugene), who relieved starter Alicia Cook (Elmira) in the fifth inning, struck out the side in the seventh inning to secure the victory and improve to 5-3 overall this season.
"The important thing is that we came out with a win," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "Amy [Harris] came in and did a tremendous job and we got a key hit when we needed it. That was very important."
Oregon loaded the bases with one out in the fourth inning after back-to-back hits by Ann Marie Topps and T.J. Eadus as well as a walk to Kristi Jorgensen. Sophomore Kayleen Hudson accounted for the Ducks' third hit of the inning ? an RBI single through the right side that scored Topps and gave the Ducks a 1-0 lead.
Eadus, who finished the game 1-for-3 with a double has had a hit in seven consecutive games and leads the Ducks with a .452 average. As a team, Oregon finished the game with nine hits, led by Chaput and Topps, who were 2-for-4 and 2-for-2, respectively.
The Vikings tied the game in the sixth inning, scoring an unearned run after Kimi Daniel reached on an error and advanced to third after back-to-back wild pitches. Second baseman Lacey Gorman then drove in Daniel with an RBI single to left field.
Oregon goes back on the road next weekend for the San Diego State tournament. The Ducks face Longwood Mar. 18 at 11 a.m.
