TUCSON, Ariz. ? Shelly Schultz knocked in three runs and Jackie Coburn hit a two-run homer to lead No. 2 Arizona past Oregon 8-1 Sunday at Hillenbrand Stadium.
Oregon (23-13, 3-4) manufactured a run in the first inning when Lovena Chaput led off with a sharp single up the middle. Breanne Sabol, trying to sacrifice, hit into a fielder's choice that forced Chaput at second.
Sabol than stole second ? one of three stolen bases on the day for the Ducks ? and Beth Boskovich chased her home with a single through the right side. It was Boskovich's team-leading 16th RBI of the season.
Arizona (31-4, 5-2), answered in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Autumn Champion got on first with a 20-foot single that died to the left of the pitcher's circle. Kristie Fox followed with a sharp single up the middle. The runners then attempted a double steal, and catcher Ashley Richards' throw to third was high, allowing Champion to score on the play.
Coburn was the next batter and she send Alicia Cook's 3-1 pitch out of the park for a 3-1 Wildcat lead. Cook took the loss, dropping to 6-4 on the season. She allowed five runs on nine hits with one walk and a pair of strikeouts.
Arizona scored two runs in the fifth on Schultz' two-RBI double and added another three in the sixth on five singles off reliever Lindsay Kontra.
Taryne Mowatt (8-1) got the win for Arizona, going five innings, with nine strikeouts.
Three Ducks got two hits apiece ? Boskovich, Chaput and Erin Goodell. Boskovich and Goodell also had stolen bases.
“It was Arizona's speed and timely hitting again, but that's their game,” said Oregon coach Kathy Arendsen. “I thought we had some good swings again today and we got the one win we wanted (Friday at Arizona State), so there are a lot of positives we can take from this road trip.”
Oregon will play a doubleheader Monday at Howe Field against Santa Clara beginning at 12:30. The games were originally scheduled to begin at 10:30, but Oregon State dropped off Santa Clara's schedule, allowing the Ducks to move their game back to the afternoon. Admission will be free on Monday.
