Travel-Weary Ducks Sweep Santa Clara
04/11/05 | Softball
EUGENE ? Despite a harrowing travel schedule that prevented the 25th-ranked University of Oregon softball team from returning home until the morning of its doubleheader, the Ducks swept Santa Clara in a non-conference matchup Monday afternoon to improve to 25-13 overall, 3-4 Pacific-10 Conference. Oregon native Alicia Cook led the Ducks to a 5-0 win in the first game before senior pitcher Lindsey Kontra pitched the second shutout of the day, winning 5-0 again in the second game.
The Ducks did not return home from their trip to Arizona until Monday morning because of a cancelled flight Sunday evening. At the time of the first pitch, 16 of the 20 players on the roster were present. By the start of the second game, all 20 players were at the field and available to play.
"This has been a very long weekend and a long day for our players," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "I felt like once we got going we played very well. We had two great pitching performances and very timely offense. I'm pleased with how the responded to the adversity."
Cook (Elmira) struck out nine batters and improved to 7-4 this season with the game one victory. Offensively, fellow freshman T.J. Eadus was 2-for-3 and accounted for two of the Ducks' three RBI in the game. Junior shortstop Breanne Sabol had Oregon's other RBI and was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Sabol finished the two games 4-for-7 (.571) with four RBI, a double and a run scored while Duck pitchers struck out 13 batters and allowed no runs and just one walk.
In the first game, Santa Clara pitcher Liz Courter kept the Oregon offense at bay through three innings, but in the fourth, designated player Kristi Leiter and right fielder Dani Baird hit back to back doubles and Eadus drove in Leiter with an RBI through the right side to give Oregon the first lead, 1-0.
In the fifth, Oregon added three runs on one hit and a Santa Clara (20-23) error before scoring the fifth run of the game in the sixth inning when Suzie Barnes scored on an error by Bronco center fielder Angela Kabanuck.
The Ducks struck early again in the second game, taking a 2-0 lead in the third inning after Erin Goodell hit her first career triple with one out. Barnes then reached on an error (interference) by Santa Clara catcher Daisy Mettlach and stole second to put two on for left fielder Lovena Chaput, who hit a deep fly to right field to score Goodell. Sabol then made it 2-0 with an RBI double that scored Barnes.
Sabol had her second and third RBI of the game in the fifth inning, driving in Chaput and Goodell with a single to right filed and the Ducks led 4-0 after five innings. In the sixth, Kayleen Hudson hit a solo home run to make it 5-0 as Oregon completed the sweep.
The Ducks return to Pac-10 action this weekend, hosting California Friday at 4 p.m. and Stanford Saturday (1 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.)
