Huskies Best Ducks in Regular Season Finale
05/14/05 | Softball
SEATTLE, Wash. - The Washington Husky offense scored at least one run in each of the first five innings and pitcher Ashley Boek had 12 strikeouts to lead the Huskies to their first win in Husky Stadium over Oregon since the arrival of Duck head coach Kathy Arendsen - a 7-1 victory that improved them to 31-20 overall, 10-11 Pacific-10 Conference. With the loss, Oregon wraps up the regular season 34-23, 7-14 and will learn of its postseason fate tomorrow afternoon at 4:30 p.m. PST on ESPNews.
"We had opportunities to score and put runners on, but we didn't get it done," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "But I thought we had a good weekend overall and I'm pleased with the way we finished the regular season."
Oregon was 4-0 in Seattle under Arendsen heading into the game and had won the season series off the Huskies in 2003 and 2004, but with today's victory, Washington took the series this season.
Junior pitcher Amy Harris, who led the Ducks to shutout wins over UCLA Thursday and Washington Friday, suffered her first loss of the weekend and finished the regular season with a 17-14 record and currently boasts a 1.16 ERA. With the win today, Boek finishes her season 17-12.
Husky leadoff hitter Dominique Lastrapes led off the game with an infield single and catcher Kristen Rivera singled with one out to put runners on in the first inning. Center fielder Aimee Minor drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single up the middle that scored Lastrapes and put the Huskies ahead 1-0 early. A solo home run by Washington right fielder Lauren Greer in the second inning made it 2-0.
Oregon loaded the bases with one out in the third inning and senior catcher Ashley Richards got her first career hit in Husky Stadium - an RBI single to shallow left field that pulled Oregon within a run, 2-1. Washington got the run back in the third inning on a solo home run by Minor that extended the Huskies' lead to 3-1. Lastrapes hit a one-out double in the fourth inning and later scored an unearned run after a Duck error and Washington led 4-1 after four innings.
The Husky offense rolled on in the fifth inning as freshman Ashley Charters hit a two-out bases loaded triple to left center field to widen the lead to 7-1 and secure the season series over the Ducks.
