Swinnen's Postseason Run Comes to an End
05/26/05 | Men's Tennis
COLLEGE STATION, Texas ? Senior Sven Swinnen's postseason run and Oregon career came to an end Thursday as he lost to No. 26-ranked Mat Cloer of Florida State, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, in the second round of the NCAA Individual Championships. Swinnen concludes his Duck career ranked first for career (84-37) and single-season (27-9) victories.
Cloer (17-11) took an early advantage, winning the first set 6-3, but Swinnen opened the second set by breaking Cloer's serve and taking a 3-0 lead. Cloer then rebounded back, tying the score at 3-3, before Swinnen regained momentum to force a third set. The tide then shifted one more time as Cloer took a 3-0 lead in the third set and held on for the victory.
Cloer, a two-time Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year, has currently allowed only one player in his four-year career to defeat him twice in the same season. Swinnen defeated Cloer earlier this year in a dual match vs. Florida State. The senior will advance to tomorrow's Round of 16 and take on No. 4-ranked Catalin Gard of Mississippi.
Many accolades have come Swinnen's way over his four-year career. The Switzerland native was a two-time first-team All-Pac-10 honoree, earned All-America honors in 2004, and became the first Duck in program history to win an ITA tournament (2004 West Regional). Swinnen also received the 2005 ITA/Rafael Osuna National Sportsmanship Award earlier this week.
Swinnen entered the postseason ranked No. 9 nationally which was a personal and all-time program-best. Swinnen became the sixth Duck to reach the NCAA postseason and only the second to attend two consecutive years (Manuel Kost 2003, 2004).
