Benedetti Tied for Third at Alister MacKenzie

FAIRFAX, Calif. ? Joey Benedetti shot a career low 66 in the second round and was tied for third at 6-under 136 following the first 36 holes of the Alister MacKenzie Invitational, played Monday at the par-71, 6,606-yard Meadow Club.
Benedetti, a junior from Huntington Beach, Calif., was four strokes behind leader Michael Watson of California, who shot a 132 and two shots back of the Golden Bears' George Gandranata (134).
As a team, Oregon recovered from a morning round of 290 (6-over) to shoot a sizzling 8-under 276 in the afternoon and was seventh of the 15 teams heading into Tuesday's final round.
Thanks to Watson and Gandranata, Cal led the tournament at 543, followed by San Jose State at 553 and Oregon State and Penn State tied for third at 561.
Washington State and Fresno State were tied for fifth at 564, with the Ducks next at 566. UC Davis and Santa Clara were tied for eighth at 568, while Kansas State rounded out the top 10 at 569.
Other Duck individuals included junior Derek Sipe tied for 25th at even-par 142 after rounds of 73-69, and Matt Ma and Zeke Reyna tied for 39th at 144. Ma, a senior from Aiea, Hawaii, had rounds of 73-71, while Reyna, a junior transfer from Southern Methodist competing in his first varsity tournament as a Duck, carded rounds of 74-70.
Benedetti will begin Tuesday's final round looking for his second straight top six finish. He tied for sixth at last week's Northwest Collegiate Classic. His previous low round was a 68, set several times the past two seasons.
