Dominating Day For Softball As Ducks Improve To 3-0
02/11/06 | Softball
HOUTSON, Tex. ? The 22nd-ranked University of Oregon softball team improved to 3-0 on the season with a couple of dominating wins Saturday morning at the Wilson-Demarini Inviational in Houston, Texas. In the first game, Oregon had 13 hits and a strong performance by pitcher Amy Harris to defeat No. 19 Florida, 7-2. Oregon followed with an 8-0 five-inning win over Texas A&M Corpus Christi (0-2), in which it had 10 hits.
"What I really liked is that we continued to get better," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "We had some mistakes defensively yesterday and I thought today we put together very good efforts both offensively and defensively. I am very pleased with how we played aggressively until the end in both games. We never let up and got some great offense out of our players."
Against Florida, senior Breanne Sabol went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored a day after hitting two home runs vs. the Gators. Freshman Sari-Jane Jenkins, who made her first collegiate start, went 2-for-5 with a run scored and a triple while sophomore Lovena Chaput was 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. In all, the Ducks' first four batters in the lineup accounted for eight of Oregon's 13 hits and scored five runs while accounting for five RBI.
Senior pitcher Amy Harris (2-0) pitched a complete game, striking out six while allowing just one earned run.
In three games this weekend, Sabol is hitting ..636 (7-for-11) with two home runs, six runs scored and five RBI.
"I wanted to be aggressive early and I felt confident," Sabol said. "I bunt a lot and it was nice to be able to swing away and get on base that way. But, overall, I think we just felt confident about our hitting as team coming into the start of the season."
After hitting Florida leadoff hitter Lindsey Cameron with a pitch in the first inning, Harris retired the next seven batters before giving up a walk to Brooke Johnson. The Gators got their fist hit of the game with two outs in the bottom of the third inning ? a single down the left field line by Shelley Stevens, but Oregon threw Johnson out at third to end the inning and prevent Florida from scoring.
Harris and the Duck defense got some help from the Oregon offense in the fifth inning. With one out, Jenkins tripled to left field and later scored on an RBI by Sabol, who reached on a fielders choice. Chaput then doubled to advance Sabol to third and both scored on a double by Beth Boskovich to put Oregon ahead 3-0. Third baseman Kristi Jorgensen later reached on a Florida error and Kayleen Hudson scored Boskovich with an RBI single to right field in the Ducks' next at bat to extend the lead to 4-0.
Florida threatened in the bottom of the fifth after a leadoff walk to Lindsay Norfleet followed by a double to left field by Kim Waleszonia. The Ducks retired the next two batters and with runners at second and third and two outs, Harris intentionally walked Cameron. The Gators brought in pinch hitter Lacy Howard, but Harris struck her out on three straight pitches.
The Ducks added two more in the sixth inning after a leadoff triple by second baseman Suzie Barnes. Sabol drove in Barnes with her third hit of the game and later scored on a double by Chaput to put Oregon ahead 6-0 heading into the bottom of the inning.
The Gators finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth, scoring an unearned run on an RBI by Waleszonia, but Oregon sophomore Joanna Gail got the run right back, hitting a solo home run to lead off the top of the seventh and put the Ducks ahead 7-1. Hudson followed with a single up the middle and sophomore catcher Amie Morris got her first collegiate hit in the Ducks' next at-bat, which was also Oregon's 13th and final hit of the game.
Cameron pulled Florida within 7-2 by hitting a leadoff home run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but it was the Gators' final run of the game.
In the second game of the day, freshman pitcher Elise Orange picked up her first collegiate win, pitching four innings and allowing just two hits and no walks.
The Ducks' offense dominated early, scoring five runs in the top of the first inning after an RBI single by Boskovich, a two-RBI double by Gail and an RBI by Baird. A wild pitch by Texas A&M Corpus Christi pitcher Leslie Weston with the bases loaded scored Jenkins.
The Ducks added three more runs in the second inning after a leadoff double by Barnes, who later scored on an RBI single by Sabol. Hudson singled later in the inning and Boskovich drove both players in with a two-RBI double that put Oregon ahead 8-0.
The Ducks will make up their game vs. Houston Sunday morning at 7 a.m. PST and will then face Kansas 9 a.m. PST.
