Softball Squeezes By BYU, 2-1
03/24/06 | Softball
EUGENE ? Oregon sophomore Lovena Chaput leads the Ducks with six doubles this season, but it was her perfectly placed bunt in the bottom of the seventh inning that scored senior Beth Boskovich to lead the Ducks to a 2-1 win over BYU Friday afternoon at Howe Field. With the win, Oregon improves to 14-9 overall while the Cougars fall to 18-8. The teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader, but inclement weather led to a half hour delay in the first game and a cancellation of the second game.
"I thought we battled today," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "We left too many runners on early in the game, but when it came down to the end, we got a key play when we needed it." Following a half hour rain delay in the top of the seventh inning, the game resumed with BYU up to bat and two outs. Oregon pitcher Melissa Rice, who improved to 5-3 with the win, struck out Paige Paramore to bring up the Ducks. Boskovich walked to lead off the inning and advanced to third later in the inning after an error by BYU second baseman Tracee Hoch. Chaput then drove in Boskovich with the successful squeeze play to secure the Ducks' win.
Oregon had the first lead of the game, scoring with two outs in the bottom of the second after Chaput doubled to left center field and BYU starter Dani Urincho walked catcher Amie Morris and Suzie Barnes to load the bases. Urincho then hit leadoff hitter Sari-Jane Jenkins to allow Chaput to score and put the Ducks ahead 1-0. BYU tied it 1-1 in the top of the fourth on a two-out RBI double by second baseman Tracee Hoch that scored Jenn Whiteley. The Ducks continue play at Howe Field Saturday vs. DePaul in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Oregon 2, BYU 1 _______________________________________________________________
