Softball Edged By Akron In NIne Innings

EUGENE ? Oregon senior pitcher Amy Harris threw six hitless innings and the Duck offense rallied in the bottom of the ninth inning, but the Akron Zips held on for a 4-3 win over the Ducks on the final day of the Wilson Cascade Clash Sunday afternoon. With the win, Akron improves to 8-12 overall this season while Oregon falls to 15-10.
Harris, who returned to action this weekend after missing two weeks with a shoulder injury, threw six innings and did not allow a hit. Akron starter Julie Boyes also threw six scoreless innings and scattered three hits while striking out seven batters. In the end, it was reliever Megan MacKenzie who picked up the win, while Oregon sophomore Alicia Cook (1-1) took the loss.
The Zips scored the first run of the game in the top of the eighth inning on a RBI by pinch hitter Katrina Moffett that scored pinch runner Paige Smith. The Ducks responded in the bottom of the inning when senior Dani Baird scored from third base on a wild pitch by MacKenzie.
Akron then added three runs in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Carrese Moody followed by a two-run home run by Julie Boyes that put the Zips ahead 4-1. The Ducks rallied in the bottom of the inning scoring two runs with one out to pull within a run, 4-3.
In Oregon's first game of the day, the Ducks won by forfeit after the umpires called the game in the fourth inning. The call came after DePaul head coach Eugene Lenti was thrown out of the game for arguing a call, but didn't leave the field.
The Ducks were credited with a 7-0 win, as stated in the NCAA rule book, and Cook got the win. It was Cook's first appearance of the season and Oregon was ahead 1-0 at the time the game was called, but none of the statistics in the game count.
