Softball Edged By San Diego State In Extra Innings

SAN DIEGO, Calif. ? Host San Diego State scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat the 23rd-ranked University of Oregon softball team 5-4 at the Aztec Classic in San Diego, Calif., Sunday afternoon. With the win, San Diego State improves to 13-4 overall while Oregon falls to 12-9.
Freshman pitcher Melissa Rice (4-3) allowed just one earned run in the loss one day after leading the Ducks to a 5-0 shutout win over No. 25 Fresno State. San Diego State pitcher Christina Ross improved to 5-3 with the win.
San Diego State loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh after a leadoff single to Tamani Wells followed by two intentional walks. Megan Owens worked herself into a 3-1 count before Rice forced her to groundout to third base and end the Aztec threat and force extra innings.
Junior right fielder Kayleen Hudson drove in senior Breanne Sabol with a single down the left field line in the top of the eighth inning to give the Ducks a 4-3 lead, but the Aztecs responded in the bottom of the eighth on a successful squeeze bunt by Allison Smith that scored Melissa Owens and Monica Alnes drove in Smith for the game-winning run.
Sabol continued her offensive hot streak, hitting a double in the top of the first inning. She advanced to third on a wild pitch by Aztec starter Celena Velasquez and Velasquez then walked sophomore Lovena Chaput to put runners at first and second. Chaput successfully stole second and Sabol scored when catcher Megan McDonald attempted to pick off Chaput.
The Ducks made it 2-0 in the third inning after Suzie Barnes led off the inning with a triple and scored on a successful squeeze bunt by Sabol. Oregon hit its second triple of the game in the fourth when Beth Boskovich hit her third career triple to lead off the inning. Junior designated player Kristi Leiter then drove in Boskovich with an RBI single to shallow right field to make it 3-0 Oregon.
San Diego State capitalized on two Oregon errors in the bottom of the fifth and scored three unearned runs to tie the game, 3-3, heading into the sixth inning.
