Arendsen Claims 500th Career Victory With Win Over Portland State

EUGENE ? Oregon freshman Sari-Jane Jenkins hit a two-RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the University of Oregon softball team to a 6-5 win over Portland State in front of 269 fans at Howe Field Wednesday afternoon. The win improved the Ducks to 13-9 overall this season while the Vikings fell to 11-9.
The win was Head Coach Kathy Arendsen's 500th career victory, which also came in Oregon's season home opener.
"I'm just really proud of how we played today," Arendsen said. "We battled in every at bat and continued to get key hits when we needed them. And, defensively, I thought we played one of our best games. This was a great way to open the home season."
Freshman pitcher Melissa Rice improved to 4-3 with the win, while Portland State starter Mandy Hill (8-4) took the loss.
Senior Dani Baird hit her first home run of the season, a two-run shot in the second inning that scored sophomore Joanna Gail to give the Ducks the first lead of the game, 2-0. Portland State right fielder Jackie Heide made it 2-1 with a solo home run in the top of the fourth, but Gail got the run back in the bottom of the inning, hitting the third home run of the game to extend the Ducks' lead to 3-1.
Heide added her second RBI of the game in the sixth inning with an RBI double off the left field fence that scored Laura Segall to pull the Vikings within a run, 3-2. Left fielder Kimi Daniel tied it 3-3 with an RBI double down the left field line that scored Heide.
The Ducks got the lead back on a solo home run by junior Kayleen Hudson in the sixth inning, but Heide and the Vikings struck again in the seventh, going ahead 5-4 on Heide's second double of the game.
Oregon's offense continued to battle in the seventh as Baird led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kristi Leiter, who was hitting for catcher Amie Morris. Sophomore Kristi Jorgensen then singled to center field and advanced to second on the play, putting runners at second and third with one out. Jenkins then drove both players in to secure the win for the Ducks.
