Team XO's May Wins Oregon Invite Decathlon

EUGENE - In second day action in the Oregon Invitational decathlon, Team XO's Tyler May climbed one spot in the final standings to win by 171 points over Wisconsin senior and first-day leader Ben Roland.
May ended the competition with a score of 7,161 points to edge Roland (second, 6,990) and Oregon senior Cody Fleming (third, 6,901) - and both were just shy of the NCAA provisional standard of 7,000 points.
Other event competitors included Wisconsin's Brennan Boettcher (fourth, 6,639), Oregon freshman Alexey Shkuratov (fifth, 6,585) and Sacramento State's Daniel Rennich (sixth, 6,357).
May's final day event marks were 14.72w in the 110m hurdles (w:4.5), 133-1 in the discus, 12-11 3/4 in the pole vault, 166-7 in the javelin and 4:33.20 in the 1,500m.
Fleming was only 79 points shy of his personal best that placed him fourth in the 2005 Pac-10 Championships (6,980). The Reno, Nevada native's marks Friday included 16.89 in the 110m hurdles (w:3.9), 146-0 in the discus, 13-7 3/4 in the pole vault, 192-1 in the javelin and 4:56.26 in the 1,500m.
Fleming posted a 7-foot, 5-inch javelin best and 4 1/4-inch pole vault personal best, and was just shy of his dec bests in the 110mH (16.80), discus (146-9) and 1,500m (4:44.12).
Shkuratov logged final day marks of 15.02w in the 110m hurdles (w:4.5), 120-5 in the discus, 13-7 3/4 in the pole vault, 143-11 in the javelin and 5:29.34 in the 1,500m. The Minsk, Belarus native posted a 6 1/4-inch dec pole vault personal best, and his still-better remaining personal bests follow: 110mH (14.63), discus (124-5), javelin (166-2) and 1,500m (4:58).
Action resumes Friday evening in the Oregon Invitational which features top sections of various field events, and an all-star distance carnival. The top sections of the 1,500m, steeplechase, 5,000m and 10,000m are slotted for a 3-hour window that will start at approximately 7:40 pm.
