EUGENE, Ore. -- Despite Alison Leiner's school record-setting six goals Friday night, the Ducks fell in a tightly contested match, 14-13 at Pape' Field.
The Ducks stayed with the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation-leading Pioneers in a game that featured nine ties and four lead changes. Oregon did not trail until early in the second half after a three-goal Denver run made it 9-8.
Denver improves its record to 10-2 and 4-0 in the conference after winning its 10th straight while the Ducks fall to 6-6 overall, 2-2 in the MPSF.
The Pioneers attempted to stall after taking the lead with 4:36 left, but the Ducks caused two turnovers that resulted in two shot attempts with less than two minutes remaining in the game, including a free position attempt by Jana Bradley with 17 seconds remaining.
Denver sophomore goalie Becky Childs made one of her 10 saves on that play, preserving the game for the Pioneers.
“We created two turnovers and got ourselves inside the eight-meter circle and got a transition opportunity,” said Coach Jen Larsen. “That's all you can ask for. We just need to take advantage of those opportunities.”
The Ducks return to action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday against Stony Brook at Pape' Field.
The Denver Pioneers will take on Stony Brook Saturday at noon in a neutral site match at Pape' Field.
