Softball Drops A Pair Of Games At Portland State

PORTLAND ? Portland State left fielder Kimi Daniel extended her hit streak to 10 games, hitting a walk-off home run to lead the Vikings to a sweep over the University of Oregon softball team on Wednesday afternoon. Portland State took game one 4-0 before rallying from a 2-0 deficit in game two to win, 3-2.

With the win, Portland State improves to 34-14 overall while Oregon drops to 23-22. Heading into the final six games of conference play, the Ducks must win at least four games to remain eligible for postseason play.

The Ducks responded to the game one loss by taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game two on an RBI double by Kristi Leiter that scored Kristi Jorgensen. Senior Dani Baird made it 2-0 with an RBI single in the fourth inning, scoring Sari-Jane Jenkins.

The Vikings made it 2-1 when second baseman Jamee Rauch bunted to score Jessica Maielua, who was running for pitcher Mandy Hill. Hill had singled earlier in the inning and helped her cause again in the fifth inning, hitting an RBI single to score Heidi and tie the game, 2-2. Daniel then hit a walk-off home run with one out in the seventh to secure the sweep.

In the first game, Oregon senior Beth Boskovich went 2-for-3 while junior Suzie Barnes and senior Dani Baird accounted for Oregon's only other two hits as Portland State starter Michelle Hext (13-8) scattered just four hits, walked none and struck out six to face just three over the minimum number of batters. And Hext's offense provided all the run support she needed, led by Jackie Heide, who went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

Heide singled to leadoff the bottom of the second inning and later scored on an RBI single by Katie Stokes to give the Vikings the first lead of the game, 1-0.In the fourth inning, the Vikings got back-to-back singles by Kimi Daniel and Heide to leadoff the inning and make their lead 2-0. With one out in the fifth inning, Portland State shortstop Lacey Gorman hit a solo home run to extend the Vikings' lead to 3-0. Oregon starter Amy Harris then walked Daniel with two outs and Heide's RBI double off Oregon reliever Melissa Rice extended Portland State's lead to 4-0. It was all the scoring the Vikings needed as Hext allowed the Ducks just one hit in the seventh inning.
