Second Round Bites UO Golfers in Season Opener

AUBURN, Wash. ? The 2006-07 men's golf season got off to a promising start -- a 2-over 290, but trouble followed in the second round as the Ducks carded a 20-over 308 and were ninth of nine teams at the Opus NW Husky Invitational following Monday's action at the par-72, 7,034-yard Washington National Golf Club.
Junior Zeke Reyna, a transfer from Southern Methodist, was a bright spot for Oregon, shooting rounds of 73-72 to stand tied for 18th at 1-over 145. Reyna is competing as an individual so his score does not count towards the Ducks' team total.
On the varsity five, senior Jay Snyder was in 24th place at 2-over 146 with rounds of 73-73. Junior Joey Benedetti followed a morning 70 with an afternoon 77 and was alone in 25th at 3-over 147.
UCLA was running away with the team race, standing nine strokes under par. The Bruins' 567 was 16 shots better than Washington's 583. Oregon State, California and UC Davis were tied for third at 584, followed by Loyola Marymount (590), Washington State (591), San Diego State (596) and Oregon (598).
Lucas Lee led the Bruins by shooting an 8-under 136. He held a two-stroke lead over Washington's John Wise. UC Davis' Louie Bishop was third at 139 with the Bruins' James Lee fourth at 140.
