Ducks Roll to Sixth Straight Victory
02/17/07 | Softball
LAS VEGAS ? The Oregon women's softball team continued its timely hitting and clutch pitching to breeze past Seton Hall, 14-0, in the second game of the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic Friday at SLC Park.
For the second game in a row the Ducks needed only five innings to secure the win due to the eight-run rule to improve their record to 6-1 with their sixth-consecutive victory. Oregon took only five innings to win its first game of the day vs. UC Davis, 8-0.
Seton Hall dropped to 0-2 on the season.
Much like their first game, the Ducks benefited from stellar pitching, with Elmira junior Alicia Cook allowing only a fourth-inning single to Seton Hall's Jenna Best and two walks while striking out nine. At one point, Cook fanned four straight batters over the first and second innings and retired seven of the Pirates' first 10 hitters on strikes to improve her season record to 3-1.
Redshirt freshman Jennifer Salling led Oregon's assault, scoring two runs and driving in three while finishing the nightcap with three hits in four appearances. Salling enjoyed a tremendous two games in the Ducks' first of three days in Las Vegas as she was 2-2 with three RBIs and one run scored in the afternoon session.
Second baseman Suzie Barnes accumulated three hits in five at-bats while tallying four RBIs in the two games while right fielder Neena Bryant totaled four hits, scored two runs and drove in two more.
Oregon wasted an opportunity to jump on Seton Hall in the opening inning when Lovena Chaput lined out to first base to strand Sari-Jane Jenkins at third base. But the Ducks made amends in the second inning, scoring four runs in the top of the frame after there were two outs following Ann Marie Topps' third home run of the year to lead off the stanza.
Oregon came back with two runs in the third inning before putting seven runs on the board in the fourth.
Friday's work extended the Ducks' string of consecutive scoreless innings pitched to 12.
They will return to face Florida International at 6 p.m. Saturday, followed by Cal State Fullerton at 8 p.m.
