Ducks Pitch Three-Hit Shutout in 6-0 Win over Utah
02/19/07 | Softball
LAS VEGAS -- Elmira junior Alicia Cook pitched a complete-game three-hit shutout and senior Ann Marie Topps scored three runs and drove in two to lead the Oregon softball team to a 6-0 win over Utah in its final game of the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic Sunday afternoon at Stephanie Lynn Craig Softball Complex in Las Vegas.
Cook allowed only one runner to advance to third base while striking out four and walking two as she improved her record to 5-1 with her third consecutive complete-game shutout. In addition, she retired the last 11 batters she faced and has not allowed an earned run over her last 28 innings.
The Ducks pounded out 10 hits to improve their record to 9-1, breaking the game open with a four-run fifth inning. Utah dropped to 3-4-1.
“I'm incredibly pleased (with our weekend play),”head coach Kathy Arendsen said of her team's five wins in as many games. “I think our kids faced adversity and showed what they're made of. We scored a lot of runs and just as impressively, our pitching stepped up. Alicia Cook threw three shutouts, we only gave up four runs on the weekend while scoring 45. It was definitely a great start and hopefully we're going to build on it.”
Topps led off the second inning with her fifth home run of season and her third of the weekend to stake Cook to a 1-0 lead. She drew a one-out walk in the fourth and scored on an error by the Utes' second baseman Kristie Keller to give the Ducks a 2-0 advantage heading into the fifth.
After Suzie Barnes and Sari-Jane Jenkins led off the fifth inning with singles, Lovena Chaput drove in both runs with a two-out double. Topps followed with double to drive home Chaput before she scored on Keller's second error of the game.
“We definitely believe that we're not a super star-oriented team,” Arendsen added. “Ann Marie is up to five home runs, Suzie Barnes still keys our offense, and (Jennifer) Salling, Jenkins, (Kristi) Leiter and Chaput all had a big weekend. It's just great to see so many kids contributing. It makes it tough for other teams to scout us because everybody in our lineup is capable of doing some real damage.”
Oregon returns to action Thursday at the University of San Diego.
