Cook, Topps Lead No. 15 Oregon Past Longwood in Vegas Finale

LAS VEGAS ? Senior designated player Ann Marie Topps broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the sixth, delivering her career-high 10th home run of the season to send No. 15 Oregon past Longwood University, 3-1, in UO's Saturday finale at the 2007 Eller Media Stadium Classic.
Topps' blast, a two-run shot and her second of the tournament, solidified the Ducks' fourth win in five tournament games and improved UO's record start to 24-3 overall.
Junior Alicia Cook (13-1) was nearly flawless in the circle, allowing an unearned run courtesy of a passed ball in the top of the sixth after holding Longwood hitless through five. The Elmira right-hander's final line read: one hit, one walk and six strikeouts over seven complete.
The Ducks took a 1-0 lead in the second when freshman right fielder Neena Bryant singled, stole second and scored on a throwing error by the third baseman.
The score remained that way until the sixth, when Cook hit Caitlin Hooe with a pitch to lead off the frame and surrendered her first hit to the next batter, Camille Ketsdever, putting runners on first and second with nobody out.
Hooe advanced to third on a fielder's choice and advanced home on a passed ball to tie the score at 1-1.
The Ducks appeared to fire right back in the bottom of the sixth, when sophomore Sari-Jane Jenkins led off with a double, but the speedy center fielder was thrown out at third on the play. Freshman shortstop Jennifer Salling followed with a bunt single, setting the stage for Topps, who spoiled an otherwise outstanding outing for junior hurler Rachel Mills.
Mills (4-2) limited the potent Duck attack to five hits, walked two and struck out two in the tough-luck defeat.
Oregon touches home dirt for the first time this season on Friday, when the Ducks host Utah State to kick off the Cascade Clash at Howe Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
QUACK TRACKS: JR RHP Alicia Cook has won 13 consecutive decisions and was 3-0 with a 1.05 ERA for the tournament ... The Ducks batted .323 as a team and held their opponents to a .190 clip over the tourney's five games ... SR DP Ann Marie Topps led UO with eight RBIs in Vegas.
