No. 17 Oregon Tops Kent State 1-0 in Eight Innings

HONOLULU – The No. 17-ranked University of Oregon softball team showed its moxie Friday morning with a 1-0 extra inning win over Kent State,for their third win in the Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Invitational at Wahine Stadium on the University of Hawai'i-Manoa campus.
Two of Oregon's stars – junior pitcher Alicia Cook and freshman shortstop Jen Salling – stepped up to start the game and battled through stomach viruses to help pull out the win in the eighth inning.
Senior Suzi Barnes started the final inning on second base and advanced to third on a fielder's choice to the third baseman. The speedy infielder scored the winning run on a slapped ball by freshman Neena Bryant that glanced off the glove of the first baseman who had played in to challenge a play at the plate.
Cook raised her record to 10-1 on the season with her second win in 24 hours. In her fifth shutout of the season, she allowed four hits and struck out four and walked one.
Oregon's defense played an equally critical role in the upper half of the eighth inning. Cook faced runners on the corners with no outs. After a fouled pop-out, she coaxed Kent State's second hitter, Jessica Toocheck, to line hard directly to left fielder Lovena Chaput who fired a strike home to throw out the potential go-ahead run.
During the first seven innings, the Ducks' best chance to score came in the fifth inning when Barnes popped a high fly ball to left center that forced the left fielder several steps to her left. The centerfielder also approached the ball and collided into the left fielder who had just made the catch and a half-second later dropped the ball after contact.
After the collision, Barnes sped around easily to third base, and was waved home but was a step too late on the shortstop's accurate throw from the edge of the outfield grass.
In the seventh inning, the Ducks threatened again with a single up the middle by first baseman Kristi Leiter who advanced to second on a walk, but the next two Duck batters popped out to end the inning.

The win was Oregon's 18th straight and raised the Ducks' record to 18-1.
Kent State dropped to 5-5. Kent State starter Kylie Reynolds went to 2-2 on the season and gave up six hits and two walks and struck out nine in the complete game effort.
