03/27/07 | Women's Golf
JUNCTION CITY, Ore. - The No. 54 University of Oregon women's golf team improved two positions in Tuesday's Duck Invitational final round and finished fifth overall in the event held at nearby Shadow Hills Country Club.
Tuesday's spring weather was again schizophrenic, with mostly cloudy skies offering occasional showers, a slight breeze and temperatures in the low to mid 50s.
Equally true to Monday's form, No.38 San Francisco held on to its opening round lead and bested the 14-team field by three strokes (299-316-304-919). No. 46 Washington State followed in second place (306-312-304-922), ahead of Oregon State (third, 313-319-301-933), Idaho (fourth, 315-311-311-937) and Oregon (fifth, 320-315-308-943).
Washington State's Amy Eneroth carded the best score of the final round (73-77-72-222) and won in a playoff over San Francisco's Jessica Potter (second, 71-77-74-222). USF teammate Kristin Nichols followed in third place (73-76-78-227), and Katie Street of Boise State (72-78-80) and Tracy Broders of Washington State (76-76-78) tied for fourth place at 230.
In the playoff, the pair of Eneroth and Potter teed off on the par four, 344-yard 10th hole and landed drives within 15 feet of each other on the center right side of the fairway. Eneroth used an iron to land the ball in the rough in front of the bunker wide right of the green, while Potter landed her approach on the left side of the green 40 feet from the cup. Eneroth chipped over the bunker to a lie eight feet above the hole, and Potter drove her long putt 10 feet past the hole, then missed her next attempt a half-foot short which led to a three-putt. Eneroth captured the win with her slightly downhill eight-foot putt.
For Oregon, junior and individual entry Victoria Wenslow (76-78-79-233) and sophomore Cathryn Bristow (79-77-77-233) tied for 10th place to lead the Ducks. Bristow carded birdies on the 15th and 16th holes halfway through her day and parred 12 other holes, and Wenslow landed par scores on 12 holes throughout the day.
Other Oregon scorers in the final standings included freshmen Felicia Eastick (13th-tie, 79-80-75-234) and Kate Hildahl (21st-tie, 81-77-79-237) and redshirt senior Therese Wenslow (81-81-77-239). Sophomore Blair Ressler (63rd-tie, 85-84-87-256) rounded out UO's official team entries, and freshman Cathleen Ward played as an individual and tied for 53rd overall (82-87-82-251).
Wenslow's top-10 finish was her first of her Duck career, and Bristow's was the fourth of her career and first of the 2006-07 campaign. Wenslow and Bristow shot UO's low scores in the first two rounds (76 / 77), respectively. Eastick paced the squad Tuesday with her 75 - the second time in her last seven rounds that she's paced the squad - and netted her second, top-15 finish of the spring after she tied for 15th in the Baja Classic in February.
