BALTIMORE -- Abbey Swift scored with :58 remaining in the first overtime as the University of Maryland Baltimore County defeated the Oregon Ducks, 11-10 in a non-conference match Sunday.
Oregon would have their chances to tie after the Swift goal, but Brooke Dieringer's free position shot with :13 left in the first OT would bang off the goal post and Kate Fleming's shot with 1:28 left in the second OT would be saved by UMBC goalie Kate Quick.
The Ducks were led once again by sophomore Ilsa van den Berg, who tallied her third hat trick of the year, including a free position goal with 2:08 remaining which tied the game and sent it into overtime. The Reisterstown, Md. native also had an assist on the day, giving her four points to lead the team.
Fleming also had a hat trick for the Ducks, whose record evens to 3-3 after the loss. UMBC moves to 3-2 with the victory.
In a game that was tight from the beginning as both teams felt each other out, the Ducks took an early 2-0 lead on goals from Dieringer and van den Berg, but the Retrievers responded with a set of goals in a :50 span that would tie the game. Oregon took the lead on Theresa Waldron's unassisted goal at the 16:04 mark, but UMBC's Kelly Fahey tallied two goals to give the Retrievers the 4-3 halftime lead.
Swift would open the half with a goal to extend the UMBC lead to 5-3, and the Retrievers would ultimately extend their lead to 8-5 before a three-goal Oregon run that began with Fleming's goal at the 18:11 mark would tie the game at eight a piece.
The Ducks and Retrievers again traded a pair of goals as each team looked for the decisive margin, but neither could find it as regulation ended 10-10.
The Ducks outshot the Retrievers 31-29 on the game and turned the ball over one less time, but the difference would ultimately be UMBC goalie Kate Quick's eight saves. Oregon's starting goal keeper Anna Poponyak was lifted ten minutes into the game and freshman Sam Debow played the rest of the afternoon, making six saves.
Oregon returns home to host a group of east coast teams next week, beginning with St. Bonaventure, Thursday at 7 p.m. at Pape' Field.
