Ducks Hold off Bonnies, 13-10

EUGENE -- After three quick goals by senior transfer Brooke Dieringer to open the game, the Ducks looked as if they would put away St. Bonaventure early, but it would not be so as Oregon needed every goal to hold on and beat the Bonnies, 13-10, Thursday night at Pape' Field.
"We played perfect lacrosse early to get those quick goals," head coach Jen Larsen said. "It was important for us to keep the pace fast to help us rebound from last weekend and we executed well."
Sophomore Alison Leiner led the Ducks with seven points, tallying a hat trick and four assists, including assisting on two of Dieringer's goals to open the game.
"I was just looking to get my flow back," Leiner said. "This win was exactly what we needed to get our confidence back and we did it on our turf."
After Dieringer put the Ducks ahead 3-0, the Bonnies stormed back to take the lead, putting up four straight goals in an eight minute span that vaulted them into the lead, 4-3. The run was keyed by two unassisted goals by Kimberly Ross.
The Ducks called a timeout to regroup and whatever coach Larsen said in the huddle worked to perfection as the Ducks were more aggressive for the rest of the half, closing on a 6-0 run, giving the Ducks the 9-4 halftime advantage. The Ducks spread the wealth in the run as Leiner scored a pair of goals and Kate Fleming, Lindsay Killian, Theresa Waldron and Jana Bradley all added a goal in the run. Leiner assisted on both Bradley and Killian's goals.
Fleming added a goal to the run, which would end at seven straight, to open the half, her second of the game. The Cardiff, Calif. native finished the night with the pair of draw controls as well.
Waldron added a pair of assists to her lone goal, as she set up both of the Ducks late goals which sealed the victory. Ilsa van den Berg was the beneficiary of the first of Waldron's assists with 4:29 to play and Casey Rector got the capper for the Ducks with 1:53 to play on a pretty breakaway with Waldron after she caused a St. Bonaventure turnover.
Freshman goalkeeper Sam Debow, starting for the first time in place of redshirt sophomore Anna Poponyak, had five saves in the game, while allowing 10 goals.
The Ducks outshot the Bonnies 34-19 in the game, including 20-9 in the first half.
"It was big for Sam to get the win tonight," coach Larsen said. "With Anna out, she has to step up and it's hard for a freshman to do that and play as well as she did tonight. We played good defense around her as well, especially Kristen Brown who is a great 1-on-1 defender."
Oregon will take the field again Monday, as they face the Vermont Catamounts at 7 p.m. St. Bonaventure will face Vermont in a neutral site match at Pape' Field Saturday at 1 p.m.
