No. 16 Ducks Fall to No. 12 UCLA
04/27/07 | Softball
The Ducks totaled five hits on the day, stranding six runners on base.
UCLA did the majority of its damage in the fourth inning with a four-run, two-out rally. The Bruins' Jaisa Creps broke the game wide open in the fourth, connecting on a two-out, bases-clearing, three-run double off the top of the wall in left center. Lisa Dodd's single into shallow left then scored Creps to take a 5-0 lead.
Sophomore Melissa Rice (21-10) took the loss allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits in 4.2 innings of work, giving way to senior Kristi Leiter to start the fifth. Rice reentered in the fifth, after Leiter walked in a run.
The Bruins picked up the last three runs they needed to end the game early in the bottom of the fifth.
Langenfeld (9-1) held the Ducks scoreless, scattering five hits.
Senior second baseman Suzie Barnes stole her 36th base of the season in the fifth, tying Marnie McCall single-season record set in 1992.
UCLA took a one-run advantage in the first when Krista Colburn led off the inning with a hard hit single down the third baseline. Colburn advanced to second on Creps' sacrifice and eventually scored an unearned run when Salling was unable to field Legaspi's hit up the middle, allowing Colburn to cross the plate.
In the third, Topps was robbed of a two-out infield single when Legaspi dove across the infield for the putout.
