
Benedetti Helps Ducks Climb at NCAA West Regional

TEMPE, Ariz. ? Juniors Joey Benedetti and Zeke Reyna shot 4-under 68s Friday to help Oregon climb to 19th at the NCAA West Regional. As a team, the Ducks shot a 7-under 281 to move up four spots from Thursday's opening round at the 7,057-yard, par-72 Karsten Golf Course.
The Ducks will enter Saturday's final round 16 strokes out of the top 10; the significance of that being that the top 10 teams at Karsten will advance to the NCAA Championships May 30-June 2 in Williamsburg, Va.
Benedetti, from Huntington Beach, Calif., had six birdies, two bogeys and 12 pars in equalling his second-lowest round of the season. Overall, Benedetti is tied for 50th at 3-under 141.
Reyna, a Weslaco, Texas, native who is in his first season with the Ducks after transferring from Southern Methodist, had five birdies and one bogey and was tied for 84th at 1-over 145.
Oregon also had a 2-under 70 from senior Matt Ma on Friday and 3-over 75s from juniors Derek Sipe and Ted Whitney.
UCLA shot a 15-under 273 that was just enough to hold on to the team lead by one shot over South Carolina. The Gamecocks fired a 19-under 269 -- the low round of the day -- that left them at 34-under 542 overall and a stoke back of the Bruins' 541.
The Pac-10 dominated the top 10 with Arizona State and USC tied for third at 550, Washington tied for fifth (with East Tennessee State) at 555, Oregon State seventh at 556 and Arizona and Stanford (plus New Mexico) tied for eighth at 557.
The second 10 included Vanderbilt (559) followed by four teams tied at 562 -- California, Nevada-Las Vegas, Pepperdine and Wake Forest. Brigham Young was 16th at 563, followed by Colorado State at 568, Augusta State at 569, Oregon at 573 and Denver and Nevada tied at 575.
Pac-10 champion Jamie Lovemark of USC shot a 9-under 63 Friday to tie for the individual lead at 12-under 132. Arizona State's Benjamin Alvarado was also at -12 following a second round 65. New Mexico's Charlie Beljan and UCLA's Erik Flores were tied for third at 133, while James Allenby of Oregon State and Kevin Chapell of UCLA were tied for fifth at 134.
The NCAA West Regional concludes Saturday with Oregon slated to tee off at 12:12 p.m.
