Higuchi, Wibowo Make Collegiate Debut at Rain-Delayed Fresno Fall Classic

FRESNO, Calif. ? Three other members of the Oregon men's tennis team began the fall portion of their 2008 season on Friday afternoon between the raindrops with new associate men's head coach Jonas Piibor at the Bulldog Fall Classic hosted by Fresno State University.
Rain delayed play on Friday afternoon and matches continued long into the evening and rain once again delayed play on Saturday.
Freshman Ayrton Wibowo played in his first collegiate match against Fresno State's Rikus DeVilliers, the No. 4 seed in the A-draw singles, and fell 7-6(4); 7-5 in the opening round. Wibowo rebounded in the consolation bracket, knocking off Washington senior Ryo Sekiguchi in a marathon match, 6-2; 3-6; 13-11. On Saturday night the freshman fell in the second round of the consolation bracket to Andre Feliz.
Senior Mikael Myrhed played his first match of the 2008 season, falling 7-6; 6-4 in a hard-fought battle against San Diego's Jose Munoz in the B-draw singles bracket. Myrhed's also fell in his rain-delayed consolation bracket match to Washington sophomore Skyler Tateishi on Saturday.
Oregon freshman Sho Higuchi also competed on day one, dropping his B-draw singles match 6-3; 7-6 to Cal Poly's Rob Foy. Higuchi won his consolation-round match on Saturday morning after his opponent, Evan Rose, withdrew from the tournament due to injury. On Saturday in the second round, Higuchi lost to Brad Bator 6-2; 6-4.
Wibowo and Myrhed played together in doubles play on Friday as well, advancing to the second round on a bye before falling 9-7 to Washington's duo of Derek Drabble and Martin Kildahl, the No. 2 seeds in the A-draw doubles bracket.
The Oregon men's and women's tennis teams will next play at the ITA Regionals on Oct. 17-18.
