SETTING THE STAGE
EUGENE - The No. 8 University of Oregon volleyball team (20-5, 8-4) puts its 14-match home winning streak on the line this weekend and welcomes its Washington rivals to Eugene for a pair of televised matches.
In its first home match in three weekends, UO hosts Washington State (7-17, 0-13), Friday, November 14 at 6 p.m., with the match immediately followed by the Oregon-Northern Colorado men's basketball game, and tickets for the men's basketball game are also valid for the volleyball match. A replay of the match will be televised in the area that night on Comcast Cable channel 37 at 10 p.m.
Two days later on Sunday, November 16, UO will try to break the all-time McArthur Court volleyball attendance record (3,716) when it hosts No. 5 Washington (19-4, 10-3) at 12:30 p.m. for a Fox Sports Northwest-televised match. Admission for the Duck-Husky match is free for fans that bring two non-perishable food items to donate to the Lane County Food Bank.
UO comes off its sixth straight win vs. Oregon State last weekend in Corvallis to notch its first pair of 20-win seasons for the first time since 1983-84, and first since the creation of the Pac-10 in 1986. The Ducks are ahead of last year's pace when they went 22-11 (and 9-9 for fifth in the Pac-10) en route to a Sweet 16 berth in the NCAA tourney.
In comparison, No. 5 Washington beat No. 9 UCLA (3-1) and No. 10 USC (3-0) at home last weekend, while WSU fell 3-0 in each contest.
Looking ahead to the final two weekends of the regular season, the Ducks head to the desert to play at Arizona and Arizona State, Friday-Saturday, Nov. 21-22, then host returning national runner-up and No. 2 Stanford, Wednesday, Nov. 26 and fellow 2008 NCAA Final Four veteran California, Friday, Nov. 28.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK PROPS
Junior middle blocker Neticia Enesi was honored two weeks ago as the Pacific-10 Conference Volleyball Player of the Week (Oct. 31-Nov. 2) for her career-best weekend at the L.A. schools.
Her block assists tally vs. USC (12) was the third-most in a match all-time for UO, a team-season high and a personal career high (and her 12 overall blocks that match was also a career best, team season best and #9 all-time for UO). Her kills tally (23) vs. the Trojans was also a personal best and the second-most in a match this season for the balanced Duck offense that had four hitters that night with double-digit kill tallies.
Her .594 and .452 hitting marks vs. USC and UCLA now give her 14 matches this season with +.400 hitting totals, (including six +.600 matches and nine +.500 matches), along with five of the team's top six marks this fall.
On the season, she ranks tops on the team in hitting (.400) and blocks per set average (1.25, 109 total), and third in kill per set average (2.37, 206 total) and points per set average (3.06, 266.5 total).
This week, she also ranked top 50 nationally in both hitting (16th, .400) and blocks (30th, 1.25 per set).
In weeks prior, she posted UO's fourth-best hitting mark all-time in a match vs. Washington State (.786, 12 kills, 1 error, 14 attempts). She also topped .700 the following week win vs. Utah (.714, 11 kills). In early October, she had a then-season-high .667 hitting mark (on 10 kills / 15 attempts) vs. No. 5 UCLA. Other marks that rank among the team's top six this year include wins vs. UNLV (.632, 13 kills) and Kansas (.615, 9 kills).
For the first time since 1989, UO has claimed at least two Pac-10 Weekly player honors in the same season. In early October, fellow junior Sonja Newcombe was accorded similar honors (and then AVCA national honors a day later) after Oregon's wins in Eugene vs. USC (3-0) and UCLA (3-1).
For the two matches combined, Newcombe's kills (25), hitting (.333), assists (5), aces (1), blocks (8) and digs (25) totals were second-most for UO's balanced attacks. Against the Bruins, the Lake Arrowhead, Calif., native hit .326 for a then-season-high 19 kills and 18 digs. She also set then-season highs with six blocks and 23 points, leading the Ducks in both categories. In the three-set sweep of USC, she hit .357 - second-best on the squad - and racked up six kills on the balanced evening offensively that had four players finish with between 5-11 kills each. She added seven digs vs. the Trojans ? second-most on the team.
Newcombe became UO's second-ever AVCA National Player of the Week after senior Gorana Maricic earned similar honors last November after another pair of home wins vs. then-No. 6 USC and then-No. 9 UCLA. Against the Trojans she landed 29 kills (.436), and had 14 digs, one ace and one block to end a 34-match losing streak against the Women of Troy. The next evening vs. the Bruins, she tallied 25 more kills (.327) for her 10th of 14 double-doubles last season and helped snap a 40-match losing streak against UCLA dating back to 1987. Overall, she hit a combined .382 against the two top-10 foes, and averaged 7.71 kills and 3.71 digs per game.
It was the second weekly Pac-10 honor for Newcombe who in 2006 was honored as a freshman after her part in UO's wins at Arizona State and Arizona - UO's first same-weekend pair of wins vs. any Pac-10 opponents in 17 years. Against Arizona, she posted a match-high 17 kills (.444) and 14 digs, while vs. ASU she led all players with 16 kills and 20.0 points to go with 15 digs and eight blocks.
Altogether dating back to the first award in 1986, Ducks have now claimed 13 Pac-10 player of the week honors in league history.
THEY CALL HER ?G'
As the Pac-10 season has heated up, so has returning All-American and senior outside hitter Gorana Maricic.
Last weekend at Oregon State, the Subotica, Serbia native paced UO in kills for the 16th time in 20 matches this season, and here was her line in the three-set night (13 kills, .458, 3 blocks, 4 assists).
In mid-October at then-No. 7 Washington, she finished with 32 kills - one off her career high (33) vs. the same Huskies last season - and her season-high 16 digs was only four off her career best (20) that also came in the same UO-UW match last year. Maricic hit a team-best .319 in Seattle a month ago ? her fourth straight league contest with a +.250 mark after her efforts against then-No. 24 Oregon State (season high .389), then-No. 4 USC (.474) and then-No. 5 UCLA (.260).
Her 32.5-point effort at UW was a season high, and her 1,059 points in her abbreviated 1 1/2-year Duck career stands third-most for UO in a career. She also ranks fifth all-time in hitting percentage for Oregon (.273), and recently joined UO's all-time top-10 kills list (ninth, 949), while everyone ahead of her on the list played at least 2 1/2 seasons.
A month ago in the season's first blanking of the then-No. 24 Beavers, she led UO in kills (20, .389), points (21.5) and blocks (3.0). Her kills total were twice as many as the next player on the balanced UO offense, and she also hit .389.
Two weekends ago at L.A., she had 17 kills vs. both USC and UCLA and ended with double-doubles thanks to her 12 and 16 digs against each. A month earlier at home, she racked up a then-season high 22 kills against then-No. 5 UCLA and now has 17, +20-kill matches in her career.
In late October, she also paced UO at home in kills vs. ASU (13, .440), Arizona (14) and Utah (18). Against UA, she added nine digs to just miss the double-double, to go along with three blocks in the three-set match.
OTHER RECENT HEROES
- Last weekend at Corvallis, senior middle blocker Kristen Forristall posted team highs in hitting (.643) and blocks (4), and her nine kills helped stymie several OSU rallies. The week before at No. 12 USC, she had her third double-digit kill tally of ?08 (11, .400). In late October at home vs. ASU, she owned team highs in hitting (.600), kills (13) and points (15.5) ? and the last two were career bests. In early October against then-No. 4 USC, she hit .500 and had a team-high six blocks, and also led UO in blocks vs. UCLA (6) among her 10 matches this season with +5 blocks. In mid-October, she added seven kills vs. both Washington and WSU and hit .429 in the latter match.
- Senior libero Katie Swoboda's 37 digs vs. No. 5 UCLA in early October was sixth-most all-time for UO in a match and a career high. She has three +30-dig matches this season (and five in her career), including a 31-dig night at then-No. 7 Washington in mid-October. The school career digs record holder added a three-set season- high 20 digs vs. then-No. 24 Oregon State ? and her highest single game average (6.67) in a match this season. She had a season-high two aces in two matches in a four-match stretch in late October vs. Utah and at No. 7 Washington.
- Two weekends ago, junior setter Nevena Djordjevic notched her first career +60-assist tallies at L.A. vs. No. 12 USC (60) and No. 9 UCLA (64), and she scored her fourth double-double of the season with her 10 digs in the former match. In November's opener at OSU, she had a three-set season assists high (42), and bettered her former mark vs. the Beavers a month earlier (40). Overall, she has nine +40-assist totals this season (including four straight) with the others coming in four- and five-set affairs. In mid-October, she also rewrote her career match best vs. then-No. 7 Washington with her 58 assists ? one better than her former mark from her freshman season vs. San Diego State. Her four-set best (51) came in the early October win vs. then-No. 5 UCLA in four sets ? two more than against another top-20 foe in Utah (49). She also had 30 assists, three kills and two blocks in the three-set win vs. then-No. 4 USC in which UO hit a whopping .452 vs. the returning Final Four qualifier.
- Junior outside hitter Sonja Newcombe came back from a minor knee injury in mid-October to lead UO to a five-set win at UCLA with season highs in kills (22) and digs (18), and she also had a double-double the night before at No. 12 USC (12 kills, 14 digs). Against rival Oregon State, she had a team-best 13 kills (.296), and added eight digs and four blocks. A month before in another 3-0 win vs. the then-No. 24 Beavers, her 10 kills (.400) was one of her 13 matches this season with 9+ kills. She has had four double-doubles this year vs. Illinois (12K, 11D), UC Irvine (10K, 12D), UNLV (11K, 14D) and then-No. 5 UCLA (19K, 18D), raising her career tally to 28, and the last outing helped her cinch AVCA National Player of the Week honors on Oct. 7. She just missed another double-double in the five-set loss at then-No. 7 Washington (12 kills, 9 digs).
- Sophomore outside hitter Heather Meyers has registered double-digit kill totals in four of the last six matches vs. UCLA (11), Utah (12, .524), Arizona (season-high 14, .360) and Arizona State (12, .259). At the Bruins, she added a career-high 14 digs for her first carer double-double, while she had a career best the night before in blocks (9) at No. 12 USC - UO's second-highest tally this season. A month ago, she had UO's match high in kills (11) and hitting (.643) vs. then-No. 4 USC, and the latter mark is her season best. In other stops in October, she added nine kills (.333) vs. then-No. 24 Oregon State, eight vs. then-No. 5 UCLA and seven at OSU.
- Senior outside hitter Marija Milosevic registered career highs in mid-October in the three-set win at Washington State in points (10), hitting attempts (20), aces (2), assists (1), and her season kill high (7) was only one off her career high. In the three-set win against ASU, she again had a season-high seven kills, hit .278, and was close to her first career double-double with her career-high 10 digs.
- Junior defensive specialist Amanda Westrick rang up a career-high four aces vs. both Arizona and ASU ? two more than her previous best that she had notched three times before in ?08. She has led UO in aces in 10 matches in ?08 ? most on the team.
- Freshman outside hitter Dana Stephenson had a career-high four kills on only five attempts vs. Utah in late October ? the top kill tally this season among newcomers. UO's veteran line-up has limited major statistical contributions by newcomers, although the 6-3 Canyon, Texas native has played the last five matches and nine of the last 10.

NATIONAL CRED
This week, the Ducks ranked eighth nationally for the second straight week and its sixth straight in the top 10 in the current week's Bison / AVCA Coaches Poll.
UO climbed to an all-time high sixth this past month, and also stood seventh in the past month's other three editions. Before this season, UO's previous highest all-time ranking ? ninth ? came in the final two polls of 2007 when it made its first-ever Sweet 16 appearance in the 64-team NCAA tourney format.
Overall in this week's edition, the Pacific-10 Conference continued to shine with six of the nation's top 10 teams ? No. 2 Stanford (19-3), No. 5 Washington (17-4), No. 6 California (19-3), No. 8 Oregon (19-5), No. 9 UCLA (15-7) and No. 10 USC (13-7).
Another league team, Arizona, again received votes, while two non-conference Duck foes - No. 17 Illinois and No. 23 Utah ? remained in the top 25. Two other teams that UO beat in the opening weeks received votes again this edition? New Mexico State and North Carolina. In previous editions, other Duck victims - Baylor and Oregon State have also received votes or have been ranked.
The complete poll is available at the http://www.avca.org/divisions/division-one-women/polls address.
Overall during the campaign, UO has stood sixth (poll #7), seventh (poll #6, #8, #9), eighth (#10, #11), 11th (polls #4-5), 12th (polls #2-3), 13th (#1) and 11th in the preseason version.
Going back to last season, the Ducks have stood top 15 nationally for 16 straight polls, and previous rankings follow: 2008: Preseason ? 11th; 9/2 ? 13th; 9/9 ? 12th; 9/17 ? 12th; 9/24 - 11th; 9/30 - 11th; 10/6 ? 7th; 10/13 ? 6th; 10/20 ? 7th; 10/27 ? 7th; 11/3 ? 8th; 11/10 ? 8th. 2007: 11/12 - 14th; 11/19 - 13th; 11/26 - 13th; 12/3 ? ninth; 12/10 - ninth.
In the NCAA's sixth RPI index of the season, UO improved two spots to 10th ? its fifth straight week in the top 12 nationally. For comparison's sake in earlier editions, UO stood 23rd (#1, #2), 11th (#3, #4) and 12th (#5). The most current rankings are available at this website ( http://web1.ncaa.org/app_data/weeklyrpi/2008WVBrpi1.html ).

The Lazarevac, Serbia native sports a 3.46 cumulative GPA in accounting and was one of five second-team members, including three Pac-10 players.
Djordjevic is the second Duck under fourth-year head coach Jim Moore to receive academic all-region acclaim with Kristin Bitter who was honored in 2006. Bitter and Crisler went on to receive national academic all-america third-team honors in '06 and '97, respectively. Another former Duck great, Sue Harbor, was a four-time Academic All-American with her first-team nods in ?84 and '85, and second-team laurels in '82 and '83.
Last season, Djordjevic was selected as a Pac-10 All-Academic Second Team honoree and was one of four UO players that received league academic recognition. Then-senior Karen Waddington, current senior Kristen Forristall and current junior Sonja Newcombe were picked as honorable mentions.

Since head coach Jim Moore's arrival, Oregon has been nearly flawless in non-conference regular season matches, culminating in a 44-3 record during his four seasons. His .936 winning percentage against non-conference competition is easily the best of any previous UO volleyball coach.
2007 ? AN AMAZING SEASON
? UO returns six starters (and its libero) and 10 letterwinners from a magical 2007 campaign that featured its:
- best record (22-11) since 1986.
- best Pacific-10 Conference finish (fifth-tie) and record (9-9) since 1989.
- first NCAA Sweet 16 appearance in the 64-team field format.
- highest final AVCA poll ranking (No. 9).
- its first-ever pair of consecutive postseason appearances.
BACK IN THE FOLD
UO's experience quotient runs high with 10 letterwinners back from last year's squad ? All-American and senior outside hitter Gorana Maricic, senior middle blocker Kristen Forristall and libero Katie Swoboda, junior setter Nevena Djordjevic, middle blocker Neticia Enesi and outside hitter Sonja Newcombe, and sophomore outside hitter Heather Meyers.
TOP DUCK ? JIM MOORE
Oregon's mercurial rise into the national elite has been charted by Jim Moore, the 2007 Collegiate Volleyball Update Coach of the Year and 2006 Pac-10 Conference Coach of the Year.
Moore, who is in his 20th year as a collegiate head coach in 2008, began UO's transformation in 2005 by leading the Ducks to their then-highest win total (12) and winning percentage (.400) in 14 seasons. The next year in ?06, he led the Ducks to their then-best overall (17-12) and conference (7-11) marks in nearly two decades. For comparison's sake, Oregon amassed a 24-64 record the three seasons prior to Moore's arrival, and registered just two Pac-10 wins. Since his arrival, UO has gone 71-46, won 25 Pac-10 matches and made consecutive NCAA tournament trips for the first time in school history.
The fourth-year Duck mentor initially staked his reputation as a master program rebuilder at Northern Michigan (1989-94, 03-04), Kansas State (19;4-97), Texas (1997-01) and Chico State (2001-03).
Those programs combined for a 143-228 (.385) mark before his arrival and improved to 268-118 (.694) the first season under his tutelage. That first stop included the 1993 national championship at Northern Michigan ? part of a run that included two championship trips and three quarterfinal appearances.
In the Big 12 Conference, he took a Kansas State program that had gone 24-68 overall and 0-36 in Big 12 play and produced three straight winning seasons, a 26-9 mark in ?96 and the team's first NCAA trip. At Texas, he guided the legendary program to the Big 12 title, three NCAA appearances, one Player of the Year honor, seven All-America selections and eight All-Big 12 honors. His Chico State squads went from a 15-75 record the three seasons before his arrival to 16-13 and 18-8 marks, and his subsequent Northern Michigan teams produced a sparkling 50-8 record.
With his 3-1 victory over Oregon State last November, he picked up the 400th win of his coaching career, and now owns an overall record of 423-202 (.677) in his 20 years as a collegiate head coach.
MOORE'S MENDOZA LINE
Head coach Jim Moore emphasized in the preseason that the Ducks should aim to hit .300 as a squad each match, and defensively limit opponents to a .100 mark or less. Here were the matches that UO has achieved the feat:
- vs. Central Florida (.358 / .048)
- at Kansas (.352 / .058)
- vs. Utah Valley (.338 / .013)
- vs. Seattle (.494 / .098)
- vs. No. 4 USC (.452 / .088)
And, here were several other matches that UO was in the same neighborhood:
- vs. North Carolina (.286 / .066)
- vs. Eastern Washington (.317 / .117)
- vs. Baylor (.307 / .138)
- vs. Portland (.269 / .037)
- vs. No. 5 UCLA (.278 / .205)
- vs. No. 24 Oregon State (.380 / .189)
- at Washington State (.354 / .165)
- vs. Arizona (.304 / .216)
- vs. Utah (.353 / .252)
- at Oregon State (.378 / .202)
SIZING UP THE ?08 SEASON
Oregon looks forward to one of its most impressive schedules in its 41st season this fall, with 12 of its 31 matches against returning 2007 NCAA tournament qualifiers.
This year's foes includes last year's national runner-up (Stanford), two more final four qualifiers (California and USC), another Elite 8 and second-round qualifier (UCLA / Washington) and two more tourney returnees (New Mexico State and UNLV).
So far during the ?08 campaign, recent NCAA qualifiers Illinois, New Mexico State and Utah ranked top 25, as did Pac-10 rivals Arizona and Oregon State, while recent NCAA qualifier Baylor, North Carolina and UNLV have received votes in various editions.
PAC-10 HONORS
Four members of the Oregon volleyball team received Pacific-10 all-conference honors following the end of the 2007 season. Besides senior outside hitter Gorana Maricic, an All-Pac-10 First-Team selection, senior Katie Swoboda, junior Sonja Newcombe and freshman Heather Meyers were all-league honorable mentions.
Meyers, Oregon's second Volleyball Magazine Fab 50 recruit in head coach Jim Moore's tenure, was named to the Pac-10 All-Freshman team in addition to her all-conference honorable mention. It was the third consecutive year Oregon has placed one player on the Pac-10 All-Freshman team ? Newcombe was honored likewise in 2006. Swoboda was a Pac-10 Freshman honorable mention in 2005, and juniors Nevena Djordjevic and Neticia Enesi were also All-Freshman Team honorable mentions in ?06.
2008 SEASON REVIEW
Last weekend at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, the No. 8 Ducks topped in-state rival Oregon State for the sixth straight time. The Ducks beat the Beavers by a 25-16, 25-21, 25-21 count, and raised its all-time record to 60-40-1 in the Civil War Series Sponsored By Your Northwest Dodge Dealers. UO hit .378 for the match ? its 12th match of the season over .300 and fourth in league play - compared to a .202 mark for OSU. Oregon hit .333, .306 and .486 in the first, second and third sets, compared to .038, .139 and .378 marks for Oregon State. Senior Gorana Maricic and junior Sonja Newcombe each ended with 13 kills and .458 and .298 hitting marks, along with three and four blocks, respectively. Senior Kristen Forristall added four blocks and nine kills ? her fourth match in the last six with nine or more kills. Junior setter Nevena Djordjevic had 42 assists ? her three-set season high (and two more than the previous OSU contest) ? and senior libero Katie Swoboda ended with 17 digs.
At the end of October in a pair of five-set affairs, UO posted its first win in L.A. since 1990, and lost the other in extra innings. At UCLA, the Ducks took a cue from the near-Tinseltown location with a dramatic movie-like storyline that ended with its first regular season series sweep of No. 9 UCLA. The night before, No. 12 USC pulled out the thriller with the fifth set decided by an overtime 23-21 score.
At UCLA (11/1), UO won the first two sets by narrow 26-24 counts, weathered a UCLA comeback with 18-25, 21-25 losses, then pulled out the fifth set 15-13 with key leadership provided by junior outside hitter Sonja Newcombe who had six kills in six attempts in the fifth set. The Lake Arrowhead, Calif., native ended with 22 kills ? three better than her previous season high (19) vs. the Bruins a month earlier ? and hit .327, her fifth conference match above .300.
Newcombe also tallied a season-high-tying 18 digs en route to sixth double-double of the season and 30th of her career. In the same category, senior libero Katie Swoboda ended with a team-high 22 digs and was one five Ducks that had double-digit tallies. Junior middle blocker Neticia Enesi led the hitting percentage column (.452) for the second straight night and 11th time this season. The Dalles, Ore., native's 17 kills tied for second-best on the team with All-American and senior outside hitter Gorana Maricic who scored her third double-double of the season with her season-high 16 digs.Sophomore outside hitter Heather Meyers also added 11 kills and 14 digs for her first career double-double, with the latter figure a career high by five digs. Junior setter Nevena Djordjevic upped her career assists best for the second straight night, and her 64 was four better than her tally (60) in the match at No. 12 USC. The Lazarevac, Serbia native added 10 digs for her fourth double-double of the season and 17th of her career.
As a team, UO scored its first win of the season while trailing in hitting percentage (.243 compared to .274 for UCLA).
The night before, the No. 7 Ducks fell in a hard-fought five-setter to USC at the Galen Center. The No. 12 Trojans won the fifth set by a score of 23-21 after the two teams split the first two sets. The Ducks claimed the second and third sets by scores of 25-15, 25-12, while the Trojans took the first and fourth sets by a 25-21 count.
Duck junior middle blocker Neticia Enesi had career highs in kills (23) and blocks (12), and also hit .594. Junior setter Nevena Djordjevic also had a career-high 60 assists, improving on her 58 that she had at No. 7 Washington two weekends before. Senior Gorana Maricic added 17 kills, and two others had double-digit tallies - junior Sonja Newcombe (12) and senior Kristen Forristall (11, .400). Newcombe boosted the team with her fifth double-double of the season (and 29th of her career) with her 14 digs that tied her second-highest tally of the season, and Maricic also had 12 digs for a similar honor. Other Duck category leaders included Maricic (2 service aces) and senior Katie Swoboda (26 digs). Sophomore Heather Meyers had a season-high nine blocks - second-most on the season - while the Ducks had 19 blocks as a team - their highest tally of the season and five more than their previous best of 14 in the five-set loss at Illinois.
The weekend before, the No. 7 Ducks won three matches in a four-day span with 3-0 wins over Arizona and Arizona State and a 3-1 win over Utah which had ranked No. 17 in the NCAA RPI index. UO's weekend sweep of the desert schools was the second under Moore. The first instance in 2006 marked the first same-weekend pair of home wins vs. the desert schools since 1986.
Against Utah (10/27), junior middle blocker Neticia Enesi hit .714 - the team's second-highest mark of the season behind her .786 mark two weekends before at WSU - and two others had double-digit kill tallies, senior Gorana Maricic (18) and sophomore Heather Meyers (12, .524). Maricic's kill tally was her sixth of the season with 18 or more, and only one other Duck player has a similar match total to that point in ?08 (Sonja Newcombe, 19). In her first action since suffering a first-set knee injury at WSU, Newcombe played the last three sets and had four kills, five digs, two service aces and four blocks.
UO raised its best-ever win streak vs. Arizona (10/25) to four straight and all by 3-0 counts. Three Duck hitters had +10 kills - senior Gorana Maricic (14), sophomore Heather Meyers (14, .360) and junior Neticia Enesi (10, .353). Senior Marija Milosevic ended with a season-high 10 digs, and just missed the double-double with her season-high seven kills was only one shy of her career high (8) from last year's Sweet 16 meeting with UCLA. Junior Amanda Westrick also had a team season-high and personal career-high four service aces for the second straight night.
Even without starter Sonja Newcombe, No. 7 UO posted its first sweep of Arizona State (10/24) since 1987. Senior Kristen Forristall stepped up to pace the team in three kills (13), hitting (.600) and blocks (3), and her 15.5 points was a half-point shy of Heather Meyers' nightly team high (16.0). The Oregon City, Ore., product Forristall savored career highs in kills and points and improved on her former marks (10 kills / 13.5 points) from the five-set match vs. Illinois the opening weekend of the season. Senior Gorana Maricic shared the Duck team lead in kills (13) and hit an impressive .440, and Meyers added 12 kills (.259) and tied her season high in service aces (3).
Junior setter Nevena Djordjevic finished with a team-best 38 assists ? only two off her season high for three sets that came vs. Oregon State ? and her eight digs left her only two shy of her fourth double-double of the season.
No. 6 Oregon capped its trip north to its Washington rivals with a 3-0 sweep at WSU (10/19) for its fifth straight 3-0 win vs. the Cougars. The Ducks hit .354 for the match ? its 10 match at .300 or better ? and more than doubled the Cougars' mark (.165). Junior Neticia Enesi hit a career-high .786 (12 kills, 1 error, 14 attempts) and tied the fourth-best hitting mark all-time in a match for Oregon. Senior Gorana Maricic ended with 11 kills (.375), and seniors Kristen Forristall (.429) and Marija Milosevic added seven kills. Junior setter Nevena Djordjevic finished with 33 assists, and her eight digs nearly marked her fourth double-double of the season and 15th of her career.
No. 6 Oregon took its all-time high ranking into Seattle (10/17) and again pushed then-No. 7 Washington to five sets for the third time in the last five meetings (with the other two going four sets), but succumbed to the Huskies to end a three-match Pac-10 win streak. Senior Gorana Maricic finished with 32 kills ? one off her career-high (33) vs. the Huskies in ?07 ? and her season-high 16 digs was only four off her career best (20) that also came in the same UO-UW match the year before. Junior Nevena Djordjevic racked up a career-high 58 assists, one better than her previous best (57) from her freshman season vs. San Diego State, and had her third double-double of the year, thanks to her 10 digs. Junior Sonja Newcombe almost gave UO its first hat trick of double-doubles this season with her 12 kills and nine digs. Senior libero Katie Swoboda had her second-highest dig tally of the season (31) and her sixth +30-dig match of her career (and fourth of the season).
In mid-October, the Ducks won the season's first installment of the Civil War Sponsored by Your Northwest Dodge Dealers vs. then-No. 24 Oregon State (10/12). In the first-ever match between the schools when they were both ranked top 25, UO staked a 3-0 win in front of a crowd of 2,159 and a West Coast Fox Sports TV audience. Senior Gorana Maricic tallied a match-high 20 kills, while the balanced offensive attack also featured +7 kills from juniors Sonja Newcombe (10, .400) and Neticia Enesi (7, .545) and sophomore Heather Meyers (9, .333). Senior libero Katie Libero racked up 20 digs in only three sets, and her daily 6.67 digs per set average was almost two digs per set higher than her then-season average per set (5.04). Junior setter Nevena Djordjevic had a three-set season high 40 assists. As a team, Oregon hit .380 for the match - its ninth +.300 mark of the year - compared to a .189 mark for the visitors - the 13th Duck foe to hit .200 or below in a match in the same span.
In early October, then-No. 11 Oregon savored its second straight weekend sweep against a pair of top-10 ranked L.A. foes with a hard-fought 3-1 win vs. then-No. 5 UCLA and a 3-0 blanking of then-No. 4 USC.
Against then-No. 4 USC (10/4), the UO ?D' forced USC's hitters into a .088 hitting percentage - its lowest of the season and outdoing its .095 mark vs. the then-No. 3 Longhorns the opening weekend. UO had five hitters/blockers with +4 kills vs. No. 4 USC that also hit .333 or better, and the squad combined on a .452 percentage (its second-highest of the fall behind its Seattle match (.494)). For comparison's sake, USC opponents had averaged a meager .131 hitting mark before the match (with a previous opponent match high of .261). Sophomore Heather Meyers hit a career-high .643 and posted a team-high 11 kills with Gorana Maricic who added a .474 hitting mark - her then-second-highest of the season. Junior Sonja Newcombe hit +.300 for the second straight night (.357, 6 kills), and had seven digs - two shy of team leader and senior Katie Swoboda (9). Junior Nevena Djordjevic dumped three kills and rang up 30 assists, senior blocker Kristen Forristall had six blocks, while Maricic had four blocks and junior Neticia Enesi added three.
The night before in Oregon's 3-1 win against then-No. 5 UCLA (10/3), UO's hitting mark (.278) was the highest by a Bruin opponent to that point in ?08, and .02 points better than the previous best by returning national champion Penn State (.276). In contrast, the Bruins hit .205 as a team - their third-lowest mark of the season. - UO's 82 digs in the four-set UCLA contest was a season best, and 14 more than the previous season best in the five-set match vs. Illinois (68), and its 12 blocks was the third-highest this season, just behind its five-set Illinois contest (14) and four-set NMSU win (13). Junior Sonja Newcombe jump-started the Duck offense early en route to season highs in kills (19) and digs (18) for her 28th career double-double and fourth of the season - marks that also were not far off her career highs (24 / 22). The Lake Arrowhead, Calif., native also enjoyed season highs in points (23), blocks (6) and assists (3). Senior Katie Swoboda raced, dived and pinwheeled her way to a career high 37 digs - four better than her previous best from her freshman season vs. Arizona State and sixth-most in a match all-time for UO. Senior Gorana Maricic added a team season-high 22 kills (.260) and tied for the team lead in points (23), while junior Neticia Enesi notched a double-dig kill total (10) for the second time this season and hit at a season-high .667 clip. Junior setter Nevena Djordjevic had a season-high 51 assists - two better than her five set tally vs. Illinois - and her nine digs left her one shy of her first double-double of the season and 14th of her career.
The week before, the No. 11 Ducks capped the opening weekend of Pac-10 play with a three-set loss at returning national runner-up and then-No. 6 Stanford (9/27), although the set count vs. Stanford wasn't indicative of the match's competitive nature. UO scored between 20-22 points in each set, and its hitting mark (.228) was the then-third-best this season vs. the returning national runner-up Cardinal behind marks by No. 3 Texas (.240) and St. Louis (.273).
Against the Cardinal, junior middle blocker Neticia Enesi paced the squad in hitting (.583, 8 kills) and was just off her season best (.632) vs. UNLV. Individually, a pair of Ducks had double digit kill totals ? senior Gorana Maricic (13 kills) and sophomore Heather Meyers (12 kills, .286). Among other noteworthy stats, Swoboda's 33 digs on the weekend tied her for fifth on the Pac-10 all-time career list with former Cal libero Jillian Davis (#5, 1,810, 2003-06).
The night before, the Ducks' nine-match win streak came to end as they lost at returning Final Four qualifier and then-No. 8 California (9/26) by scores of 20-25, 15-25, 15-25. Against Portland (9/16), senior Gorana Maricic had nine kills and a .389 hitting mark to lead the balanced attack that included a perfect hitting mark by senior Kristen Forristall (6 kills, 1.000). The Pilots hit .037 for the match ? the seventh Duck foe this season to hit under .100, with four others hitting .200 or below (making it 11 of the first 12 opponents this season under the latter mark, and the other tallying a still paltry .229). The Ducks also posted a season high 13 service aces, and improved on their former season best of nine in a five-set loss at Illinois.
In the heart of that busy preseason stretch, UO swept Seattle (9/14) after it hit .494 as a team, and held the Red Hawks to a .098 mark. A season-high 10 Duck players notched kills, led by Heather Meyers (9), Kristen Forristall (8) and Gorana Maricic (8).
En route to the Oregon Classic title (9/12-13) the two days before, UO dispatched Baylor (3-0), Eastern Washington (3-0) and UNLV (3-1). Tourney MVP Gorana Maricic led all four squads' players in kills (46, 4.60 p/s avg.), and ranked fifth in hitting (.340) and blocks (10, 1.00 p/s). Also named to the all-tourney squad were juniors Neticia Enesi who had the top overall hitting mark (.475) and Sonja Newcombe who stood sixth in kills (28, 2.80 p/s) and third in digs (3.60 p/s). Among other impressive tourney stats, setter Nevena Djordjevic led all setters in assists (10.90 avg.), and sophomore outside hitter Heather Meyers posted UO's highest tourney hitting percentage (.389) ? one of five Ducks that ranked top 10 in the category.
Two days before at Irvine, Calif., (9/10), then-No. 12 UO notched its fourth straight sweep, thanks to a 25-20, 25-22, 26-24 score. Two Ducks ended in double figures in kills ? senior Gorana Maricic (14, .194) and junior Sonja Newcombe (10, .346) ? while sophomore and area native Heather Meyers paced the team in hitting percentage (9 kills, .538). Newcombe scored her second double-double of the year (and 26th of her career) thanks to her 12 digs. Also on defense, senior Kristen Forristall claimed six blocks, and junior Nevena Djordjevic racked up 39 assists ? her then-second-highest mark of the season that also tied her best for three-set affairs.
The first weekend in September in the Kansas Invitational (9/5-6), the then-No. 13 Ducks swept all three opponents, Central Florida, Kansas and Utah Valley, en route to the tourney title, and flexed its depth by rotating all 15 players through several matches.
Junior middle blocker Neticia Enesi was tabbed the Kansas Invitational MVP, and was joined on the all-tourney team by senior middle blocker Kristen Forristall and sophomore outside hitter Heather Meyers. Enesi led the team in hitting (.514), points (32.5) and service aces (3), and ranked second in kills per set (2.67), points per game (3.17) and blocks per set (1.22, 11 total).

The opening weekend of the season, then-No. 11 UO opened the season in the State Farm Illini Classic in Champaign, Ill., (8/29-30) with a four-set win vs. returning NCAA qualifier and then-No. 23 New Mexico State, then split the next day with a three-set win over North Carolina and a heart-breaking five-set loss to Illinois. UO won the first two sets before the Illini ? who received votes in the preseason poll and climbed to No. 19 the following week ? won the final three sets by four points or less (including the third and fifth sets by two points).
Junior Neticia Enesi was one of two all-tournament honorees with junior Sonja Newcombe. Combined in the three contests, Enesi led the team in hitting percentage (.340), points (39.5), blocks per game (2.17), block assists (25) and total blocks (26) and ranked second in points per game (3.29) and third in kills (26). She added a career high in total blocks (9) vs. both North Carolina and Illinois, and her nine block assists in the latter match was only one off the seventh-best mark all-time for UO (10). * PRESEASON STARTER PROFILES
GORANA MARICIC, Sr., OH, Subotica, Serbia
In 2007, Oregon senior outside hitter Gorana Maricic became just the second player in the volleyball program's history to receive All-America honors after being named to the AVCA Division I All-America Second Team.
The first-year Duck led the Pacific-10 Conference with 6.07 points per set and 5.50 kills per set, and the latter stood fourth nationally. Maricic set numerous Oregon individual records, including three new single-season bests for points (679.5), kills (5.50 avg.) and points (6.07 avg.). She totaled 14 double-doubles on the year, and on three occasions, cracked the 30-kill benchmark. In 33 matches, Maricic failed to reach double-figure kills only once.
The 6-foot-3 outside hitter was named to All-Pac-10 Team, the first Oregon player since Madeline Ernst in 1998 to earn the honor, and was also an All-Region First-Team honoree. She was also named a National Player of the Week (Nov. 12), after leading the Ducks to its first consecutive back-to-back home victories over top-10 opponents. During a 3-1 victory over then-No. 6 USC, she led the Ducks with a match-high 29 kills (.436) and 14 digs. The next night while sweeping past then-No. 9 UCLA, she again posted a match-best 25 kills (.327) and 12 digs. In three postseason matches, Maricic averaged 6.45 points, 6.00 kills and 3.58 digs per set.
The Subotica, Serbia native redshirted for Oregon in 2006 after transferring from Northwoods University, where she played during the 2004 and 2005 seasons. At Northwoods, Maricic was named an AVCA Division II Second-Team All-American as a sophomore in 2005. She became the first player in the history of the award to earn All-America honors at both the Div. I and Div. II levels.
In ?07, Maricic became the 15th All-American that Moore has coached in his 20 years as a head coach, and became the first Oregon player in 23 seasons since Sue Harbour was an CVCA first team selection in 1984.
KRISTEN FORRISTALL, MB, Sr., Oregon City, Ore.
Maricic wasn't the only upperclass player who made an immediate impact in her first Duck season in ?07.
The 6-foot-2 middle blocker started 26 of Oregon's 33 matches in 2007, leading the team with 117 total blocks. Her .305 attacking percentage was second-best for UO and 10th in the Pac-10.
As the team neared the postseason, the Oregon City native became an influential and emotional leader on the floor. In three postseason matches, Forristall averaged 2.38 points and 1.33 blocks per set. In the second round match at Kansas State, she set a season high with nine blocks. She also matched her season high of nine kills, and set a new career high with 13.5 points against the Wildcats.
The two-sport star sat out the 2006 season after she ended her UO collegiate basketball career and made the switch to volleyball.
KATIE SWOBODA, Sr., L, Portland, Ore.
The 5-5, four-year starter ended the 2007 season atop the Oregon all-time career digs chart with her mark of 1,599 digs.
She broke the record in 2007 on Nov. 16 against Oregon State, surpassing Teri Kramer's mark of 1,481 that had been in place since 1987. A 2007 Pac-10 honorable mention finished the season third in the conference averaging 5.33 digs per set. That mark set a new Oregon single-season average for digs and broke her own record (5.28) from 2006.
She also holds the top three single-season dig marks in Duck volleyball history (586, 565, 448).
NEVENA DJORDJEVIC, Jr., S, Lazarevac, Serbia
In ?07, Djordjevic led Oregon with 8.62 assists per set, running a 6-2 offense with sophomore setter Rachel Morris. Djordjevic finished the season with five double-doubles, including 46 assists and 11 digs at then-No. 11 Kansas State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
At 5-foot-10, she also had the knack for dumping deceptive kills from time-to-time, totaling 47 last year. In the postseason, she averaged 9.33 assists per set, reaching her season high total of 46 twice in the second round at Kansas State and the third round against UCLA.
Her first season, the All-Pac-10 Freshman Team honorable mention, averaged 7.26 assists a set and 697 total and had a career-high digs average (2.08).
NETICIA ENESI, Jr., MB, The Dalles, Ore.
The 6-1, two-year starter got the opening nod in all but one match in ?07 and averaged 2.38 points per set.
She set season highs with 17.0 points and 12 kills at then No. 4 UCLA on last October. Against rival Oregon State last November, she hit the 12-kill mark for the second time, while cumulating eight total blocks. In the postseason, she totaled 10 blocks and averaged 0.92 kills per set.
As a freshman, she was an All-Pac-10 Freshman Team honorable mention, and her season stats follow: 55 blocks (13 block solo / 42 block assists, 0.56 avg.), 236 kills (2.38 avg.), 11.8 hitting pct., 291.0 points.
SONJA NEWCOMBE, JR., OH, Lake Arrowhead, Calif.
For the second consecutive season in ?07, the 6-1 outside hitter was named a Pac-10 honorable mention. The Ducks' leader on the floor finished the 2007 season averaging 4.20 points, 3.54 kills and 2.61 digs per set.
Among last season's highlights, she led the Ducks with 22 kills at No. 11 Kansas State in the NCAA second round, and overall in the postseason averaged 4.29 points, 3.67 kills and 2.75 digs per set.
Her 470.5 points in 2007 ranked fourth all-time, and her average of 4.20 points per set was seventh-best in UO history for a season.
In her first two years at Oregon, shed totaled 927.0 points ? the third best career mark in school history.
HEATHER MEYERS, So., OH, Temecula, Calif.
The sophomore outside hitter became the second Volleyball Magazine ?Fab 50' recruit for Jim Moore in his short tenure at Oregon, the first being Sonja Newcombe. Just like Newcombe, she made an immediate impact as a freshman in 2007.
Last year, the 5-foot-11 outside hitter led Oregon and finished fourth in the Pac-10 with a .347 (347-110-683) attacking percentage. Not only did the mark rank tops in the nation for true freshmen, it also now stood as the second-best Oregon single-season clip.
Meyers was tabbed at season's end to the Pac-10 All-Freshmen Team, and averaged 3.10 kills, 0.88 assists, 0.94 digs and 0.62 blocks per set. With one of the most dangerous serves on the squad, Meyers led Oregon as well as the conference with 0.41 service aces per set.
Early in her frosh campaign, she was named to the Kickoff Classic all-tourney team, earned the Tournament MVP award at the Baylor Invitational and was named the top server at the Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge.

RULE CHANGES IN 2008
College volleyball fans will notice several NCAA rule changes this fall:
? The term “Set” will be used instead of “Game”.
? Points Required to Win the first four sets is now 25 points (instead of 30), with a two-point lead (as before). Fifteen points (and a two-point lead) is still required to win the fifth and deciding set.
? Substitutions - Each team is now allowed a maximum of 12 substitutions per set.
? Coaches Position - When the ball is in play, coaches will be asked to stay at least 1.75 meters from the court's sideline. An imaginary line perpendicular to the outside edge of the extended attack line indicates this distance. If a coach doesn't comply, the referees may assess a team delay sanction.
? Ball Handling Point of Emphasis. In recent years, referee training has emphasized focusing on the player's contact point with the ball, and not allowing outside influences, such as spin after release, to influence ball handling decisions. A 2008 point of emphasis regarding the second team contact now instructs referees to only call multiple contacts that are obvious enough to be readily seen, and to be less severe when judging extremely athletic plays.
SWEET 16!
In 2007, the Ducks savored its first appearance in the Sweet 16 in the 64-team NCAA Tournament format, thanks to an opening sweep of Missouri State (31-29, 30-20, 31-29) at Manhattan, Kan. A day after its first postseason win in 23 years (a five-set win vs. Hawai'i in 1984), the Ducks staged a 3-2 comeback win at No. 11 Kansas State (24-30, 20-30, 30-27, 36-34, 15-11) ? its first win of the season when facing an 0-2 deficit, and staved off three match points by the Wildcats.
The Ducks' record-breaking season then came to an end the following weekend in Palo Alto, Calif., when No. 9 UO lost in four sets to No. 8 ranked UCLA (23-30, 19-30, 30-28, 24-30). In the defeat, Gorana Maricic logged 30 kills (her third 30-plus kill total of the season) and her 14th double-double thanks to her 14 digs. Oregon's 2007 postseason run raised Jim Moore's postseason record at UO to 2-2 and 22-11 overall.
OTHER 2007 MILESTONES
UO established a new single-season record for attacking percentage, hitting .267 on the year...the previous clip was .249, set in 2004...the Ducks posted two straight +.500 seasons for the first time since the 1989 and 1990 seasons.
2007 NATIONAL RANKINGS
Oregon ended last season ranked ninth in nation in the final 2007 CSTV/AVCA Division I Coaches' Top 25 Poll on Dec. 19. Six Pac-10 teams finished in the nation's top 10, led by No. 2 Stanford, No. 3 USC, No. 4 California, No. 7 UCLA, No. 9 Oregon and No. 10 Washington. Oregon's No. 9 ranking was the highest ever for the program that stood in the country's top 25 for 12 weeks total in ?07 after debuting at No. 24 on Sept. 17.
OREGON POSTSEASON HISTORY
In 2006, Moore led the Oregon volleyball team to its first winning season since 1990, and more importantly, its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1989. The Ducks were rewarded with No. 12 Hawai'i in the first round, and fell 3-0 at the Pyramid in Long Beach, Calif. Prior to the 2007 season's victories, the Ducks had not won a match in the NCAA Tournament since defeating Hawai'i in five sets on Dec. 1, 1984. Oregon lost to ninth-ranked San Jose State in three sets, the following round. Including 2007, Oregon has made six appearances in the NCAA Tournament (1984, 1986, 1987, 1989, 2006, 2007) and are 3-6 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.
SO HARD TO SAY GOODBYE
Oregon's only major loss from the 2007 roster was senior Karen Waddington. Waddington left the Duck program having played in 342 sets (105 matches), and averaged 1.01 kills per set. She ended her career with 310 blocks ? a mark that stands ninth all-time. Her 274 block assists ranked fifth in volleyball program history.
2007 CONFERENCE REVIEW
With three Pac-10 teams advancing to the Final Four and two others in the Sweet 16 (and a sixth in the NCAA field), Oregon faced an ever-tough ?Conference of Champions'. In the opener at Mac Court, the Ducks squandered a 2-0 lead against then eighth-ranked Washington and lost in five, but responded by winning its next three matches. A tough schedule had Oregon playing four consecutive top-10 opponents, each match resulting in a loss. Oregon ended that rough patch with a win at rival Oregon State, and another victory at home against Arizona, but took what could have been a fateful misstep with a 3-1 loss to unranked Arizona State on Oct. 26. The Ducks lost two more at Stanford and Cal, before regrouping for one of the best weekend's in Oregon volleyball history.
For the first time ever, Oregon defeated two top-10 opponents back-to-back. The Ducks knocked off the No. 6 USC, 3-1, before sweeping past then ninth-ranked UCLA. The Ducks picked up two additional victories after that weekend before dropping their final set of the regular season at then-No. 6 Washington.
The Pac-10 featured a conference-record seven first-team All-Americans from five different schools, while Oregon's Gorana Maricic was one of five second-team honorees. Since 1990, Pac-10 players have racked up nine AVCA Player of the Year honors, including 2007.
The Pac-10's string of success at the NCAA tournament is unmatched with the league capturing five of the last seven NCAA crowns (2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, 2001) and 13 titles overall.
