Ducks Fall to Bradley, 11-3
02/16/08 | Softball
LAS VEGAS - The UO softball team dropped Saturday's opening game in the Louisville Slugger Classic, 11-3, to Bradley at Stephanie Lynn Craig Park.
The two teams were tied 1-1 after two innings, before Bradley scored one run in the third and erupted for nine more in the fourth to raise its record to 3-1 on the season after one-run wins earlier in the tournament over Wisconsin (3-2) and UTEP (4-3).
Braves' starter Ashley Birdsong raised her record to 3-0 and gave up seven hits, two earned runs, struck out five and walked none, and earned her second win of the day after she pitched three shutout innings earlier in the day vs. UTEP.
Oregon's offense came up with seven hits, including six from it top four hitters. UO's run in the first inning was initiated by freshman second baseman Cortney Kivett who reached by beating out a swinging strikeout on a pitch into the dirt and blocked by the catcher. She stole second base then scored on a double by junior left fielder Sari Jane Jenkins to the left center gap.
Down 11-1 entering the fifth, the Ducks nearly avoided eight-run stoppage rule, and scored two runs and had runners on second and third base with two outs before the well of offense ran dry. Kivett led the inning off with a bunt single and advanced to second on a single by Jenkins. Bryant followed with another single that scored Kivett, and Jenkins advanced to third and Bryant took second on the play at third. Chaput lined a single to right field to score Bryant, but afterwards senior right fielder Kayleen Hudson and senior shortstop Lovena Chaput fouled and popped out, respectively, to end the game.
In the first inning, Bradley scored its first run when right fielder Amanda Clack hit a homer over the right field wall with two outs on a 1-2 pitch by junior Duck starter Melissa Rice.
The Braves added another run in the third inning when leadoff hitter Jess Boerger doubled to left field with one out and scored on the next play when designated player Mitchell also doubled to the left field gap. Rice then forced two groundouts to second base to end the inning.
In the fourth inning, Bradley opened the inning with four straight singles off Rice who was relieved by freshman pitcher Brittany Rumfelt who forced grounders that netted two force-outs at the plate from senior third baseman Joanna Gail sandwiched in between a walked in run. An error at shortstop, however, kept the inning alive as Bradley went on to scored seven unearned runs. Rice ultimately had to come back in to force the final out as Rumfelt faced seven batters in her 2/3 inning of work, gave up three hits, walked one and gave up five runs ? but none earned.
UO stranded six runners in the game. In the first inning, Jenkins was on third base with only one out, but Chaput and Hudson struck out swinging. In the second inning, the Ducks had runners on first and second with no outs, but freshman catcher Ashley Kivett popped to the pitcher, sophomore designated player Blair Williamson grounded out to the pitcher and Cortney Kivett struck out. In the third, Chaput doubled off the center field wall with two outs but Hudson popped up to third. Chaput's hit could have easily scored a run if Neena Bryant's preceding shot to right field hadn't been nabbed on a diving play by the right fielder.
In her 4 1/3 innings of work, Rice (0-2) gave up nine hits, four earned runs, walked two and struck out two.
The Ducks return for a second game Saturday afternoon vs. South Carolina that starts at 5:30 pm. The Ducks and Gamecocks meant in the NCAA Regional final last year in Columbia, S.C. and the hosts held a 1-2 edge in the postseason match-ups last spring.
