02/24/08 | Women's Lacrosse
RICHMOND, Va. ? Oregon finished its first trip of the season to the East Coast, by upsetting 18th-ranked Richmond on Sunday at Crenshaw Field.
The Ducks, now 3-1, are on a three-game winning streak, and have their second victory over a ranked opponent in the program's short four-year history.
Richmond drops to 1-2 in 2008.
“It was an absolute unified effort from every member of the team,” head coach Jen Larsen said. “The offense executed its motion, our midfield played a tenacious transition, and our defense connected all the way back to the goalkeeper. It was an all-around very high performance. We played well for the entire 60 minutes.”
After conceding the first goal of the game to the Spiders, Oregon scored five unanswered during a 10-minute span, with Ilsa van den Berg netting two of those scores. The junior forward ended the day with a game-high four goals. Richmond added one more score before the half ended, while the Ducks' Theresa Waldron and Jen May were able to score in the last 10 minutes.
Ahead 7-2 at the start of the second half, Oregon did not relent. Once again it was the Spiders scoring first, but again the Ducks answered, this time four consecutive goals to mount a 11-3 advantage. Richmond added a fourth score, but the Ducks put an end to any thought of a Richmond comeback, as Oregon scored the next six goals of the game, led by two from freshman Alex Breiner.
Richmond added its fifth score as the buzzer sounded.
Seven Oregon players got on the scoreboard as the Ducks outshot Richmond 29-14. Van den Berg led the way with four, while Breiner and Waldron added three apiece. The senior trio of Lindsay Killian, Jana Bradley, and May each scored two goals each, while sophomore Erin Chisnell added one.
May produced an all-around game from the midfield with two goals, on assist, five ground balls, two draw controls and one caused turnover.
Oregon forced Richmond into 17 turnovers, while Duck goalkeeper Anna Poponyak made three saves.
The Spiders were led by Lexie Marrocco's two goals and one assist.
After playing their first four games of the season on the road, Oregon will return to Eugene for its home opener, hosting LeMoyne at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Pape' Field. The game will be a BI-Mart Family Day. Fans can show their BI-Mart card at the gate and two adults and unlimited children can gain entrance for $10.
QUICK QUACKS: Oregon's first win over a ranked opponent came on Feb. 10, 2007, when the Ducks defeated No. 16 Stanford, 10-6, in the season opener at Pape' Field.
