Duck Bats Spring to Life in 6-0 Win at the San Diego Classic
02/29/08 | Softball
SAN DIEGO ? It took their third game of the extended weekend, but the Oregon Ducks finally woke from an offensive slumber, banging out 14 hits in a 6-0 rout of Harvard University at the San Diego Classic.
The Ducks (11-8) scored in all but the opening inning, methodically distancing themselves from the women from Cambridge.
Kayleen Hudson and Neena Bryant led Oregon with two hits and two RBIs apiece as nine different Ducks registered at least one base knock.
Of course, Oregon's pitching and defense weren't too shabby either with UO posting its fourth shutout in its last five games. Right-handers Melissa Rice and Alicia Cook combined on the clean sheet with Rice (3-4) tossing four no-hit innings for the win.
Rice struck out six and Cook, who was unavailable on Thursday due to flu-like symptoms, fanned five in her three innings of relief.
Harvard (0-1) didn't manage a base hit until the bottom of the sixth on an infield single by leadoff hitter Stephanie Krysiak. By that point, Oregon appeared to have the game in hand with a 5-0 margin.
For good measure, the Ducks pushed one more across in their final at-bat.
The Ducks scored for a fourth consecutive inning in the fifth, when Joanna Gail homered to straightaway center, making the score 4-0. The round-tripper was the second of the season for the senior.
Hudson cracked her first home run since 2006 to extend Oregon's lead to 3-0 in the fourth. The redshirt senior led off the inning with a line shot over the 225-foot marker in left-center field. The Ducks strung together three more hits but left the bases loaded.
Bryant made it 2-0 Ducks in the third with a base hit to left that plated Sari-Jane Jenkins from third base. Lovena Chaput followed with a single and Oregon appeared primed for a breakout inning. But the Crimson dodged a couple of bullets in the form of a lineout to right from Monique Fuiava and a warning-track flyout to left-center by Gail, keeping the damage to a minimum.
In the top of the second, Hudson scorched a shot up the middle that grazed HU starter Shelly Maddick (0-1) on the way by, driving home Monique Fuiava from second base with the game's first run. Fuiava led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a well-placed sacrifice bunt by Gail.
Harvard had a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the first without the benefit of a base hit. Lauren Murphy struck out but reached on a passed ball and Hayley Bock was hit by a pitch to place runners at first and second before Rice handled a one-hopper and tossed to first for the third out.
Oregon tagged a pair of Crimson hurlers for three runs apiece. Madick lasted four innings and Margaux Black pitched the final three.
Play resumes at the San Diego Classic for the Ducks on Saturday with a single game against Cal State Bakersfield scheduled for 7 p.m.
QUACK TRACKS: Oregon used its third starting catcher in as many games with senior Amie Morris getting the nod against the Crimson. Morris had two hits, including an RBI double ... Sari-Jane Jenkins and Cortney Kivett also had two-hit games ... UO was 6-for-7 in stolen base attempts, including Jenkins' 3-for-3 effort on the base paths.
