Gail Powers Ducks Over Bakersfield, 7-6
03/02/08 | Softball
SAN DIEGO ? University of Oregon senior Joanna Gail had 10 total bases, going 3-for-3 with two home runs and a double to lead the Ducks past Cal State Bakersfield, 7-6, at the San Diego Classic.
Kayleen Hudson also went deep for the Ducks (12-8), who pounded out 11 hits against the Roadrunners (6-9).
Right-hander Alicia Cook (5-4) wasn't at the top of her game, but grinded out four-plus innings for the win. She allowed all six CSUB runs, four of which were earned, on seven hits while striking out four.
Fellow righty Melissa Rice locked down the victory with her first save of the season. Rice allowed one hit, walked two and struck out two in three innings of work.
Cook was chased in the fifth after allowing three runs ? two earned - on three hits in the inning, including a pair of doubles as the Roadrunners crept to within a run. However, that was it for both teams in terms of scoring the rest of the way.
Cal State Bakersfield pushed across an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 6-3 after a hit and a pair of errors by Gail. But the third baseman from nearby Poway, Calif., more than made up for her miscues in the top of the fifth with a titanic solo blast down the left field line.
Aimee Morris delivered a clutch two-out two-run single to right in the top of the third, putting the Ducks back on top by four runs at 6-2.
The Roadrunners had cut the UO lead in half with a pair of runs on three hits in the bottom of the second.
Hudson continued her recent power surge in the top of the second, belting her second home run in as many days to stake the Ducks to a 1-0 lead. Gail followed with a towering blast to left, chasing CSUB starter Katie Chavez (1-2) after only one-plus inning of work.
Oregon tacked on two more runs in the inning after base hits by Carlyn Re and Cortney Kivett and a two-run fielding error by shortstop Heather Veitch, making it 4-0 Ducks.
QUACK TRACKS: Cook, who was unavailable on Thursday due to flu-like symptoms, made her first start of the road trip ... FR Cortney Kivett was 3-for-4 with a stolen base. She now has a seven-game hitting streak and is 9-for-13 on the trip ... Oregon is 2-1 at the San Diego Classic and 3-1 for the week.
