02/29/08 | Men's Tennis
Eugene, Ore.? The Oregon men's tennis team lost 4-3 against the 27th-ranked University of Washington Huskies at the Student Tennis Center on Friday.
?The guys played their hearts out today and stayed with one of the premier teams in the nation,” Director of Tennis Nils Schyllander said. “It came down to the third set of the last match.”
All three doubles matches of the evening were fought hard, but Washington was able to pull off all three victories, therefore clinching the doubles point and going ahead 1-0.
At both the No. 2 and 3 doubles spots, Alexander Cornelissen and Romeo Mortera were unable to defeat Andy Kuharsky and Derek Drabble, losing 8-4. The No. 3 spot finished similarly, with Martin Kildalh and Tobi Obenaus coming out ahead of Francisco Gallardo and Stephen Wiechert with a final score of 8-4.
The longest doubles match of the evening was at the No.1 spot. Marcos Verdasco and Geoff Embry play close from start to finish against Patrik Fischer and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan. The teams traded points the whole way through, but the Huskies finally finished ahead of the Ducks, 8-5.
In singles play, each team was able to win three matches.
Cornelissen fell behind quickly to Kuharsky and was not able to come back at the No.3 spot, losing 1-6, 2-6 in the first singles finish.
The match at the No.5 spot finished second, with Embry claiming a quick victory over Drabble, 6-2, 6-4.
Fischer pulled ahead quickly at the No.1 spot, and when Verdasco could not get enough points to turn the tide, Fischer won 6-3, 6-1.
The first set at the No.4 spot was close at every point, with Mortera coming out ahead of Ryo Sekiguchi, 7-5. In the second set Mortera battled even harder, clinching the match in a stunning 6-1 victory.
It was back and forth at the No.2 spot, with Gallardo winning over Nedunchezhiyan 6-4 in the first set, but then losing 3-6 in the second. The third set left the Ducks behind, 2-6.
Wiechert lost the first set to Obenaus 2-6 at the No.6 spot, but came back to win the second, 7-6, after a tie breaker. The third set went to the wire, but Oregon brought home the victory 6-4.
The Huskies took the victory over the Ducks with a score of 4-3.
Oregon's next match will be on Sunday, when the Ducks face No.59 Denver at the Student Tennis Center at 12 p.m. Next weekend, Oregon remains at home for a three-match weekend, facing Pacific on Friday, March 7, and both Nevada and Portland State on Saturday, March 8.
