Kosinki Added to Ducks' List of NCAA Automatic Qualifirs While Men Claim Team Title

SEATTLE ? University of Oregon freshman Alexandra Kosinski earned a trip to the NCAA national championships while the men utilized a solid effort across the board to claim the team title to highlight the final day of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Championships Saturday at the University of Washington's Dempsey Indoor Facility.

Kosinski posted a winning time of 4-minutes, 39.54 seconds to secure an automatic bid in the NCAA Track and Field Indoor Championships March 14-15 in Fayetteville, Ark., and moved into second on the school's all-time indoor list in the event. Among the times set heading into this weekend, her time would rank among the top five in the country this year.

“She certainly was one of the high points today and she ran fantastic,” Associate Head Coach Dan Steele said. “Nicole (Blood) deserves a lot of the credit for going out hard at the start of the race and taking Alex with her. But at the end, she really looked great and ran away from the rest of the field.”

Washington's Amanda Miller finished almost four seconds behind Kosinski at 4:43.41, while the Ducks' Blood was third in 4:43.77.

She was one of two Oregon winners on the women's side as sophomore Keisha Baker continued her winning ways, finishing first in the 400 in 54.15. The school record-holder improved her NCAA provisional qualifying mark as she finished 54-hundredths of a second ahead of runner-up Jeavon Benjamin of Arizona State.

Sophomore Zoe Buckman also made a strong case for a trip to the NCAA indoor meet with a second-place finish in the 800 with a personal indoor best of 2:06.88 ? a mark that stands less than two seconds shy of the NCAA automatic qualifying standard.

The women's effort was good enough to pace the Ducks to third place in the team standings with 72 points. Arizona State was the women's winner with 154.5 points, followed by Stanford's 141 points.

The Oregon men captured only two first-place finishes on the afternoon but received scoring help from 10 different individuals and a second-place 4x400 relay finish, to come from behind and win the team title with 90 points. California finished second with 84.5 points, followed by third-place Stanford with 83.

“We were very pleased with our effort today,” Steele said. “I think it shows what kind of potential we have on the men's side for the outdoor season. We have a lot of depth and a lot of talented kids.”

Sophomore Andrew Wheating and Portland senior Michael McGrath grabbed the top two finishes in the 800 meters at 1:48.82 and 1:49.28, respectively, with Wheating coming within a second of the NCAA's automatic qualifying time of 1:48.20 after remaining the leader in the race from the outset.

“He's only going to get better and better and I think has a chance to get into the NCAA meet with that time.”

Sophomore sprinter Derrick Jones was declared the winner in the 60 meters despite running an identical time of 6.78 as second-place finisher Justin Woods of Washington State.

The men's 4x400 quartet of Ashton Eaton, Chad Barlow, Phillip Alexander and Marcus Dillon shaved almost two seconds off their previous NCAA provisional qualifying time, finishing second with a mark of 3:07.13. Arizona State, which began the weekend with the second-best time in the country in the event, posted a winning effort of 3:07.06.

“We took the No. 2 team in the country right to the wire,” Steele emphasized. “I think it will be good enough to get in (the NCAA meet). You can never be sure but I feel good about it,” Steele said of the time that would be good enough for fourth in the country at the start of the weekend.
