Cook Hurls One-Hitter in 2-0 Idaho State Blanking
03/23/08 | Softball
EUGENE ? The University of Oregon softball team (23-11) won its ninth straight game thanks to another combined pitching gem in its 2-0 win over Idaho State in the second game of Sunday's Cascade Clash doubleheader.
Senior starter Alicia Cook (9-7) won her fourth straight game and cruised through her five innings of work. The Elmira, Ore., native yielded only one hit to the game's leadoff batter Megan Miller, and struck out six and walked one.
Freshman Brittany Rumfelt came in to pitch the final two innings and got her first save. The Lakeport, Calif., native struck out two and walked none in her first day of work since late February because of a stress fracture in her pitching finger, and also pitched a scoreless inning in Sunday's opener.
The Ducks scored both of their runs in the third inning after sophomore centerfielder Neena Bryant led off with a single over the shortstop's head. She scored on a double to center field by freshman designated player Monique Fuiava who also came around when senior third baseman Joanna Gail followed with a single down the left field line. The RBI was Gail's fifth of the day after she had a season-high four in the first game Sunday.
Bryant's 2-for-3 day extended her season-best hitting streak to a nine games, and in that span she owns team bests in average (.556), homers (3), hits (15) and RBI (13).
Gail also had two hits in Sunday's second game (2-for-3) and is on a seven-game hitting streak. Freshman second baseman Cortney Kivett (2-for-4) and senior shortstop Lovena Chaput (1-for-3) also extended their current batting streaks to five games.
Senior right fielder Kayleen Hudson and Fuiava also went 1-for-2 at the plate Sunday.
Overall, Oregon's offense accounted for nine hits and five walks, but left 12 on base, including three baserunners in the first, two base runners in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings and another runner in the sixth inning.
For Idaho State (1-18), starter Natasha Milesovich pitched the complete game and gave up two earned runs and nine hits, struck out three and walked five in her six innings.
Sunday's wins raised UO's record to 6-0 in the Cascade Clash which took a week break after this past week's final exams.
Earlier Sunday, the Ducks won 8-0 over the Bengals as Melissa Rice and Rumfelt no-hit Idaho State. Bryant and Gail hit their team-leading sixth home runs of the season and 16th of their careers (and are only four short of UO's all-time list).
Looking ahead, the Ducks remain at the friendly confines of Howe Field for their final doubleheader of the tourney, and take on UC Davis at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 25.
