LAS VEGAS - The University of Oregon softball team (15-11) topped Southern Utah for the second straight day, this time 4-2 to open day two of the UNLV Invitational at Eller Media Stadium.
In the top of the seventh, freshman first baseman Monique Fuiava boomed a pinch hit home run over the 195-foot left field, and even off the top of the park's 230-foot exterior restraining wall. The Las Vegas native collected her fourth homer of the year to tie for the team lead with Joanna Gail.
The Ducks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Sophomore first baseman Carlyn Re led off with a walk, and senior catcher Amie Morris sacrifice bunted to the third baseman whose throw went into right center field, and Re came around to score and Morris advanced to third base. Sophomore center fielder Neena Bryant followed with a single to center field to score Morris.
Oregon's third run came in the sixth after junior left fielder Sari-Jane Jenkins singled to center field, stole second, and scored on a single to right field by Bryant.
Southern Utah scored their runs in the top of the seventh after left fielder Natalie McBurney opened with a double, shortstop Ally Daniels walked, and a hard bouncing infield hit to the right side by catcher Caroline Fernandez that deflected off the first baseman's glove back towards second and scored a run. DeJesus then laid down a perfect bunt to the right side and beat out that scored their second and final run.
The Thunderbirds threatened to score two innings before in the fifth when pinch hitter Henderson led off with a single to right field then advanced to second on a passed ball. Senior starter Alicia Cook responded with three straight outs - a groundout to third base, a sacrifice bunt and a popup to third base ? to end the inning.
Altogether, Cook finished with six strikeouts and one walk in her ninth complete game and raised her record to 6-7.
At bat, six Ducks combined for eight hits as freshman Cortney Kivett upped her hit streak to 13 games with a 2-for-4 day, and Bryant went 2-for-3 with an RBI and walk. Re, a day removed from her first career 3-for-3 performance vs. the same team, went 1-for-1 Saturday with a walk.
Southern Utah starter Kristina Brooks (4-10) gave up eight hits, struck out one and walked two, and two of her four runs were earned. The Thunderbirds' leading hitter was Dejesus who went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and four others posted hits.
The Ducks return at 1:30 p.m. to face host UNLV for their second and final game of the day. A link to live stats is available via the softball schedule link by clicking the page icon in the media column on the right side for the game entry.
