Early Firepower Leads No. 17 Denver Over Ducks In Tourney Semis
05/01/08 | Women's Lacrosse
BERKELEY, Calif. ? Mountain Pacific Sports Federation regular season champion, Denver, scored five of the game's first six goals, creating a deficit too difficult for Oregon to overcome, as the Ducks fell 18-12 in the tournament semifinals at Memorial Stadium on Thursday.
The 17th-ranked Pioneers (13-5, 5-0) move onto the championship game on Saturday to play the winner of Thursday's second semifinal between Cal (9-7, 4-1) and Stanford (9-8, 3-2).
The Ducks (12-7, 2-3) will play in third place game for the third consecutive season, facing the loser of the second semifinal between the Golden Bears and Cardinal. Gametime is set for 1 p.m. tomorrow.
Denver's offense was firing on all cylinders early on, scoring 11 first-half goals. The Pioneers put five unanswered goals in the back of the net during the first 11 minutes, taking a 6-1 lead.
Oregon couldn't recover, tallying only five first-half scores. Denver didn't make things easier, scoring the first three goals of the second period for a commanding 14-5 lead.
Denver's Steph Coyne, Karen Morton and Ali Flury scored four goals apiece. Coyne added three assists, while Megan Carver tallied three goals and four assists as the pair tied for a game-high seven points.
Oregon senior Jenny Browne came off the bench to lead the Ducks with five goals. Ilsa van den Berg recorded her third straight game with the hat trick, adding three goals and one assist. Lindsay Killian (1 goal, 1 assist), Jen May (1 goal, 2 assists), Jana Bradley (1 goal) and Casey Rector (1 goal) also scored for the Ducks.
Oregon goalkeeper Anna Poponyak made six saves while Becky Childs and Katie Gold split time in between the pipes for Denver, combining for eight saves.
The Ducks have been unable to defeat Denver in the teams' six meetings over the last four seasons. The Pioneers also eliminated the Ducks from the 2006 MPSF Tournament in the semifinals.
Van den Berg now owns two single-season records for the Ducks: goals (45) and points (62). May previously held the single-season record for goals with 41 in 2005. Alison Leiner previously held the single-season points record with 58 in 2006.
