EUGENE - The No. 12 University of Oregon volleyball team (8-1) won its sixth straight match this season, thanks to its sweep of Eastern Washington in its first of two Oregon Classic matches Saturday.
UO won by scores of 25-19, 25-15, 25-22 to remain the only unbeaten team in the tournament with the four teams set to play again later Saturday.
Versus EWU, the Duck hitters topped .300 as a team for the fifth time in six matches, thanks to Saturday morning's .317 mark, and were led in kills by sophomore Heather Meyers (9, .571) and senior Gorana Maricic (9, .294).
The top hitter for the Eagles (3-5) was Hayley Hills (15 kills, .300), while the visitors hit .117 collectively.
In the first set, the teams were tied 6-6 before UO went on a 4-0 run that included senior Kristen Forristall's kill and Meyers' service ace. After EWU closed within 12-10, UO responded with a 9-2 run to go up 19-12. Up 24-15 late on senior Marija Milosevic's kill, EWU scored four straight points for the first time in the set to close within 24-19 before a service error by Hayley Hills ended the set.
Meyers rang up four kills in the first set, while Forristall added three. Junior setter Nevena Djordjevic posted a season high two assists an eight assists.
In contrast, UO jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the second set and never looked back. Moments later, UO's 14-6 lead quickly expanded to 20-7 en route to a 25-15 decision. Maricic posted four of her kills in the set, while junior Amanda Westrick had both of her service aces in the set, raising her season tally to six and one shy of team leader Meyers (7).
In the third set, UO responded to a 4-4 tie with a 4-0 run to go up 8-4, and never trailed after that, leading by at least two points from its 16-14 advantage on. Maricic had four kills in the final set and Enesi added three.
Next up, UO faces Baylor (8-1) Saturday night at 7 p.m., while EWU faces UNLV (3-5) at 4:30 p.m.
The Ducks also play at home Sunday at 1 p.m. vs. Seattle. Youth 12 and under can receive $1 tickets at the entrance, and can check in at the marketing display off the University street entrance (on the northwest side of the building) to sign up for a free half-hour post-match skills clinic with Duck coaches and players.
QUICK QUACKS: UO head coach Jim Moore is now 59-42 all-time for UO and 411-198 overall. ... UO is now 13-2 all-time vs. the Eagles and won its last two meetings. ... UO is now 40-3 in the preseason under Moore, and has yet to lose a home tournament match under the fourth-year mentor (and sports a 10-0 mark).
