
Ducks Sweep Knights in Kansas Opener

LAWRENCE, Kan .? The No. 13 University of Oregon women's volleyball team enjoyed opened the Kansas Invitational Friday morning with a convincing three-set win over Central Florida at the Horejsi Family Athletic Center on the University of Kansas campus.
The Ducks (3-1) won their second match of the year in straight sets by scores of 25-13, 25-13 and 25-19 and rotated all 15 players through a match for the first time this season.
Oregon hit a season-high .526 in the second set, and totaled .308 and .306 in the first and third sets. Defensively, UO limited UCF to negative marks the first two sets of -.097 and -0.95, respectively, while the Knights posted a .290 average in the third set.
Overall, UO combined for a .358 team hitting total and improved on its former season best (.286) from last Saturday's sweep of North Carolina in Champaign, Ill. The Ducks also had a season low 11 hitting errors after registering 15 in wins vs. then-No. 23 New Mexico State and UNC last week.
One of five Ducks with +5 kills, senior Kristen Forristall had a season-high total (9) ? one shy of her personal best - and also led the team in blocks with her seven block assists. Junior Neticia Enesi tied Forristall for the team's individual best hitting percentage of the season (.462), and added eight kills.
Three of UO's other top returning hitters added +5 kills - junior Sonja Newcombe (2 sets, 6 kills, .333), senior Gorana Maricic (2 sets, 5 kills, .308) and sophomore Heather Meyers (3 sets, 5 kills, .333).
In the first game after an early 4-4 tie, the Ducks extended out to an 10-7 lead on a block assist by Newcombe and junior Nevena Djordjevic. UO soon upped its lead to 13-10, then went on a 12-3 run to end the match with by a 25-13 score. UO saw multiple freshmen ? Rhiannon Tooker and Betsy Sedlak ? on the floor at the same time late in the set ? the first time this season - and Tooker claimed the first kill of her career in her only attempt of the match. Forristall and Maricic had three kills apiece on four and six attempts, respectively, while Forristall had a set-best three blocks and Meyers had a service assist.
In the second set, UO rocketed out to 6-0, 11-2 and 16-4 leads en route to a comfortable 25-13 win. At the set's end, UCF faced a 24-9 deficit and claimed four straight points for the first time of the day, before senior Marija Milosevic ended matters with her team-best fourth kill of the set. Forristall added another three kills in the second stanza and had two block assists. Enesi posted two block assists and was perfect in her two hitting attempts (1.000), and Forristall (.750) and Milosevic (.375) also had sparkling hitting marks en route to multiple kills. Freshman Dana Stephenson started her first set of the year and claimed her first collegiate kill.
In the third set, the Ducks continued to rotate players through its lineup and gave sophomore setter Rachel Morris the opening nod for the first time in '08. The two teams traded points in the first half of the match with ties at 2-2, 4-4, 7-7 and 9-9, and UO taking it first lead of more than two points at 15-12 on an Amanda Westrick service ace. UO then ended the match on a 10-7 run to win 25-19. Newcombe had five of her six kills in the match in the final set, and Enesi had four kills ? both of which were season highs in a set for them this year. Westrick had a season-high four digs; Morris racked up season highs in assists (9) and digs (3); and Meyers demonstrated her versatility with her two assists.
For Central Florida (2-3), Janine Williams led in kills (11) and hitting percentage (.148); Kathleen Curry posted the top mark in digs (7); and Lauren Rosenthal had 13 assists.
Looking ahead, the Ducks return for their second and final match of the day vs. host Kansas at 7 p.m. CT / 5 p.m. PT, then face Utah Valley, Saturday morning at 11 a.m. CT / 9 a.m. CT.
