STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 16 University of Oregon volleyball team (16-7, 6-7) logged its third-highest hitting mark (.298) of the Pac-10 slate, but still fell, 3-0, to returning NCAA runner-up and No. 7 Stanford Friday night at Maples Pavilion.
The Cardinal (17-7, 10-4) avenged its first loss last month to the Ducks in Eugene since 1989 and won by a 25-23, 25-16, 25-23 score Friday.
Junior outside hitter Heather Meyers led the Ducks in kills (14) and hitting (.481) for the sixth time in each category this season, while freshman Katherine Fischer led the digs column (11) for the third time in '09.
Among other notable stats, senior outside hitter Sonja Newcombe had a double-digit kills tally (11) for the 20th time this year and added seven digs; senior middle blocker Neticia Enesi posted eight kills, hit .353 (her 17th +.300 total in '09) and shared the team lead in blocks (4) with sophomore middle blocker Dana Stephenson (4 each); and senior setter Nevena Djordjevic logged 35 assists.
Cardinal category leaders included Cassidy Lichtman (16 kills), Stephanie Browne (.615 hitting), Karissa Cook (34 assists), Alix Klineman (2 aces), Gabi Ailes (22 digs) and Janet Okogbaa (3 blocks).
Stanford led the team comparison in kills (57-43), hitting (.378-.298), assists (53-42) and digs (52-41), UO nearly doubled Stanford's blocks total (9.5-5.0), and the teams tied in aces (3-3).
UO's hitting mark was its highest since it hit .402 a month ago in a 3-0 sweep of then-No. 14 California, and its only other better hitting mark in Pac-10 play has come vs. Washington State in late September (.305). The Ducks also tallied a .289 mark in their earlier match vs. Cardinal in Eugene in mid-October - a 3-2 Oregon victory.In the first set, neither team led by more than a point until 8-8, when Stanford scored four straight points to take a 12-8 lead - ultimately its biggest advantage of the set and force a Duck timeout. UO pulled back within 14-13 and stayed within two points until 23-20 on a Lichtman kill. Oregon responded to tie it 23-23 with three straight points on a Meyers kill, Enesi and Fischer block, and another Cardinal attack error, but kills by Okogbaa and Klineman led to a 25-23 result.
In the second set, Stanford jumped out to a 6-1 lead thanks to two kills and an ace by Klineman, then extended its lead to 14-8. Oregon's biggest run of the set - a 3-0 response - made it 14-11 on a Meyers kill and a pair of blocks by Enesi and Meyers. Stanford answered with five straight points to go up 19-11, en route to a 25-16 decision.
In the third set, Oregon got out to a 7-3 lead, but Stanford answered with four straight points to tie it, 7-7. After an 8-8 tie, Stanford used a 5-1 run to go up 13-9 before Oregon fought back with a 5-1 run of its own to tie it 14-14, thanks to a pair of kills by Newcombe and additional kills by Enesi and Meyers. After ties at 15-15, 16-16 and 17-17, Stanford went ahead 19-17, but Oregon stayed within 1-2 points, then tied it 23-23 on a block by Dana Stephenson that led to a Cardinal timeout. Stanford, however, ended the match on two straight kills by Okogbaa to win the final stanza, 25-23.
Looking ahead, No. 16 UO next plays at No. 12 California Sunday, Oct. 15 at 12:30 p.m., with the game telecast by various Northern California Comcast providers.
